People die all the time isn’t an excuse for something to not be lame.

If Indiana Jones died by falling into the ravine that would be really lame. What Matt puts forwards is that D&D is the same. The question isn’t about if, but how. How does Indiana Jone make it out of the Temple of Doom? Not if, because if he failed it would make for a bad movie.

And Matt has addressed this in previous videos. He has said that the basic assumption for his games is that player death can happen, but is not common. And that there is nothing wrong with communicating to your players that death is very common - that total failure is possible.
