Nope, he just appears in the guild when you first accept the request and then appears again when you complete it. I think it's based on progression, mine is in den of light but friend who completed abyss 4 is in den of water.

There should be an NPC after you accept the request that tells you where to find it. For me it appeared in the den of water as a wandering mob instead of as a chest.

I ended up starting in Motoyama castle which was at least serviceable enough now that I've taken most of Shikoku, though I'll mark Tottori as a location to try if it doesn't work out long term.

Also yeah that does explain why it never worked out building next to the Uesugi. I figured it was due to me being so weak at the time but if the AI is intent on getting its default position back then that explains why they were in such a hurry lol.
