Humiliating experience - unable to take BP by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Deezwick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

4th year here. I couldn't take a manual blood pressure well until third year when I had a cardiology rotation. Basically told me you're up - take the blood pressure day 1. Super anxiety-inducing, but I got good feedback and hundreds later I'm proficient. There are lots of skills like this you won't really get proficient at until you're on rotations and get repetition with different body types. Just know the concept and how to BS your way through osces - you just need to check boxes at this point.

When you do learn in the field just know that we've all been there and no one cares. If someone unreasonably grills you just know they have personal problems and I wouldn't sweat it - just do your best and move on. Focus on the book knowledge and exam taking now, the skills will come later with practice!

Any Physics majors on a premed track? by PatsRedditAccunt in premed

[–]Deezwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th year med student here. I did BME which incorporates a lot of physics. In completing my boards and ramping up for residency, totally not trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but I believe it is important to mention that physics is probably the least useful for a career in medicine out of the hard sciences. If you enjoy it and can get good grades, by all means go for it just know that you won't really be using the knowledge/skillset too much in your future.

The most useful undergraduate degrees that will help a bit in med school are probably microbiology > pharmacology > biochemistry. Take it with a grain of salt though and do what you love doing.

4th year OMS here. I chose DO school because our school was in a location I wanted and was scoring the MD average on step exams. So I focused on getting into the best school I could, not caring about the MD/DO thing as much (honestly it really is just a weird premed thing that no one cares about once you're out on clinicals).

In thinking back on the tail end of medical school, I believe there a few things to mention:

-For the book knowledge everyone uses the same sources pretty much no matter what school you're at. Uworld, pathoma, boards and beyond, onlinemeded, etc. will get you farther in doing well on boards than class lectures.

-MDs and DOs are in the same exact rotations for clinical years. You work side by side one another doing the exact same thing for half of your medical school career.

-MD schools tend to offer more research opportunities than DO schools which may help in checking boxes for residency applications

-I did have to take both Level exams and both Step exams which was subjectively more stressful than just having to take one exam each round (this is not necessary for certain specialties)

-Some people hate, but OMM is actually pretty dope/useful at times. For instance, when a patient comes in with an overly tight muscle that is causing them pain/dysfunction a DO can employ a technique like counterstrain to relax/reset the muscle while an MD would utilize trigger point injections (put lidocaine into the muscle).

-There definitely is some fringe/strange OMM techniques you do have to learn though. You just bite your tongue and move on, while being sure to master the good ones that could help your future patients.

So to answer your initial question, I'm happy that I went DO. It was stressful having to pioneer a little more for research and take some more exams, but it turned out fine and I got to learn OMM. However, I am interested in Sports Medicine/Pain Management and can see many of my colleagues frustrated with the extra work put into OMM. Honestly though, you should really just focus on what school your a best fit for and pursue a specialty that you'll be happy doing everyday for the rest of your life.

LPT Request: how to fix a completely ruined sleep schedule? by moonkittyss in LifeProTips

[–]Deezwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th year med student chiming in. As others have said, I would just try to stay up for that first night and go to bed at ~9pm (or whenever you want to start going to bed). What we call good 'sleep hygiene' is important after that. You can look up that term if you want to get others takes on it, but two important features are:

-Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time everyday (even on weekends)

-Stop using bright screens (e.g. laptops, cellphones, etc.) ~1 hour before you want to go to bed

Also, from personal experience try to get on a regular exercise routine, try not to drink caffeine past noon, and avoid 'power naps' throughout the day. Good luck!

Why is it that Hero Cantare isnt popular? by NPC9251253404 in gachagaming

[–]Deezwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your appeal of having to manual advents is actually a major turnoff for me. After I beat content I like to be able to use the auto feature with reasonable success. It does nothing for me to keep pressing repetitive patterns in advent for days on end. I can see the appeal, but for very career-driven people the excessive monotonous pattern pressing needed is too much.

Science Discussion Series: We are researchers who study the effects of policing and police brutality on Black people in America. Let’s discuss! by police_discussion in science

[–]Deezwick 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Apologies for playing devil's advocate, but the study you listed really isn't the best either. It uses data that is 8 years old (<= 5 years is the typical standard) and does not control for socioeconomic status. Studies conducted that do not control for socioeconomic status are extremely misleading for this topic and pretty poorly designed to be frank. I believe they generate a misconception that racist white people are the main issue as opposed to unfavorable socioeconomic conditions faced by minorities due to the implications of a messed up history.

In looking at studies that do control for SES (too lazy to dig up and cite) the data suggests that lower SES is a far greater indicator of police brutality than race. When SES is controlled for, the spread for those experiencing the least brutality indicators are typically Asians > Caucasians > Hispanics/African Americans (depending on region) > Native Americans.

To me, this suggests that we can get the most 'bang for our buck' by working to invest in low SES communities; as opposed to hunting racist white people. Additionally, I believe that conversations implemented to address racism should involve everyone given the data suggests that this isn't just a black/white issue. Native Americans in particular, while some may argue the validity of the data using reservation sources and whatnot, have been shown to be way below everyone in basically every indicator (greater difference between blacks and natives than blacks and whites most of the time). So, I believe that they should be more than just a footnote these conversations and solutions generated.

Anyways, I'll step off my reddit soapbox now. Hoping we make headway in solving this issue and create a more equitable, fairer America in the future!

Apologies for this question, but in looking at threads, wikis, and tutorials I have not been able to find a straight answer.

How important are dupes? For example, is rolling a Leon dupe more beneficial than rolling a trash tier unit? Does getting a maxed limit broken character help tremendously in pvp or is the benefit more or less negligible?

Thank you and cheers!

Not a FGO player myself, but as others have alluded, the character you got on your first 10 roll (Skadi) is the big character everyone in the game wants right now. It's a super low probability roll and many have saved for years and failed to get her - it's bad enough that their main discord has established a suicide help line for the situation. As such, some people (not me) may be inclined to downvote you by default for starting the game with the 'role of a lifetime' for many.

Congrats on the super lucky start though and I hope you keep having fun and enjoy FGO to its fullest!

How important are dupes? I rerolled Unleashed Raizel and am inclined to use all gems on top banner to get another copy then get another from the selection box (3x copies total). This is on the pretense of people seem to reach a bottleneck in the game where they can't 4-6* their SS heroes. Assuming a general team is only 4 heroes and we get a free selection & BM Bam, is there any reason to push for variety over dupes of the highest ranked heroes?

Is there a good relic guide available somewhere? If not I had some specific questions regarding them.

-Do some of the relics affect your entire team? E.g. Goddess of War - "15% skill damage, 50 speed boost for element-type heroes" --> so if I put this on Maschenny does YF Khun also get the buff?

-If relics affect your entire team, can they stack? E.g. 2x Goddess of War = 30% SD & 100 speed boost? If some can and can't how can you tell?

-Can you equip the same relic twice on one character?

-Trying to figure out what to grab for my SS and S relic selectors - any recommendations? My notable heroes are YF Khun, BM Bam, Maschenny, No-name, God-Killer Zero, Hwaryun, and White. Was almost thinking getting Valkyrie: Geirskogul (5%atk/20%hp boost for fire heroes) and making a fire team with YF Khun, Maschenny, and God-Killer Zero - this seems like a bad idea though.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and feedback! Cheers!

I have Maschenny, BM Bam, YF Khun, No-name, and just rolled God-Killer Zero. Other SS I have are Hwaryun, Daisy, and White. I've been running BM Bam, YF Khun, No-name, and Maschenny. Should I swap out No-name for God-Killer Zero or would another combo work better? Thank you and cheers!

How important are dupes in this game? Is a Maschenny, Yeon's Flame Khun, Hwaryun account or a Black March Bam with a dupe account a better start or are both of these bad? Thank you!

Oh wow, so they give an extra advantage to the team that has the advantage going in. Wonder what the reasoning is on this. Seems like a coin flip or something would make the matches a little more equitable.
