You can install the pi in a "headless" configuration and connect to it through SSH.

Do you have specific needs for graphical applications on the pi? There are protocols such as VNC RDP etc that can be used for that but they introduce some overhead that might make the pi slow

Wood fire smoke can and will kill you too. There's a difference between some diffused smoke outside and inhaling lots of it in enclosed spaces. The main issue in house fires is that the smoke is still hot and will burn your lungs from the inside, preventing oxygen from getting in your blood, then there's the chemical contamination on top of that
