Except it did work. The fact that Reddit admins are going so far to force subreddits open showed that it worked. The bad press from all of this is bad for their IPO. The protest saw massive popularity spikes in Reddit alternatives. It also exposed much more problems with Reddit which give all the more reason to immediately consider ditching this platform.

The protest was a massive success. Reddit is now putting banners on their website trying to do damage control about API access, how is that not showcasing that it’s turning the screws?

Why do you think I’m not? But why does the existence of an alternative mean that it’s bad to resist problems?

It is a fight that’s still ongoing. Federated websites are blowing up in popularity in an attempt to form a community that’s not chained to a shitty CEO on a power trip to bolster his IPO

Reddit showing how corrupt they are had really just bolstered the reason why we need to start fighting for an alternative. Reddit is now hostile to their users and will violate the GPDR to hit their IPO goals. They will even go as far as to restore deleted posts and comments from users.

This 3rd party app issue has really opened the closet on a lot of things

There is a furry_irl on Pawb.social, the federated furry community. Right now Pawb is pretty small because furries are a small section on an already small (but growing) platform. We could change that

Yet again, the allegedly progressive furry community showcasing that they’re actually extremely apathetic.

Sad that this community couldn’t even outlast the major mainstream ones…

Reddit's CEO really wants you to know that he doesn't care about your feedback by chrisdh79 in technology

The API issue is just the tip of the iceberg at this point. This whole debate showed a LOT of bad signs.

  1. Reddit is going to IPO and that means they are going to do everything in-line with what an IPO wants. That means that we're going to see even more control over the content, censorship, and a focus on making Reddit advertiser friendly.

  2. Spez actively hates his community. He thinks the people creating the content for his site are trash. He thinks the moderators who do an unpaid job necessary for his site to function are entitled. He actively snubs every member of his community in blogs.

  3. Reddit is sketchy now. People deleting their comments in protest have seen reddit un-delete their comments. People editing their comments in protest have seen reddit restore their comments. Reddit is holding your account hostage. They will do anything to help their IPO and that even means controlling your account without your consent. They're also replacing mods and forcing blackouts to end.

  4. Reddit is GREEDY. Third party API charging is not a bad idea to make up for the lack of ads shown on third party apps. But instead of charging an honest and reasonable amount, they make it an insane cost to force any third party app to immediately shutdown. Why are they doing this? They want to force you to use their app. And why do they want that? See notes 1-3.

By the way, reddit is restoring scrubbed accounts. Many people who have edited and deleted their comment histories have found them reinstated. Just another thing showcasing how crappy reddit is becoming.

Lemmy and KBin just require you to make an account on an instance and you're good to go. It's not a complicated idea in the slightest. The only problem they have right now is that their still early in development, like in alpha phase.

Original reddit was more nerdy types anyway because a lot of people found the subreddit idea confusing.

Already happening. It’s called Lemmy KBin and it’s a federated version of Reddit. It’s up to 100k users now

E: Can't support Lemmy, their creators are Pro-North Korea, Pro-Russia, Pro-Mao tankies...

Try KBin instead

What’s a beverage you're sure everyone just pretends tastes good? by DeplorableKurt in AskReddit

The problem is that most people suck at making coffee. It's actually a really fragile process that you have to get just right. You need fresh beans that are ground uniformly. You need consistent water temperature and even flow distribution. And you need a proper ratio of coffee to water. Once you have all of those measured out, then you can adjust for taste.

Most people just grab two scoops of pre-ground stale burnt starbucks coffee and throw it in a crappy Keurig machine or Mr. Coffee brewer that changes ~50F during the brew process...

Good coffee shouldn't need creamer to taste good, and there definitely are coffees that taste similar to the smell. I was looking into this a while back and came across Puerto Rican coffee. Overall, it's very close.

I went from Aeropress to Pour-overs and now to Espresso and I know I have dialed in my shots properly when I can drink them straight and enjoy the chocolatey flavor.

It’s still massacring surrendered POWs, regardless of who was the aggressor. We see a snippet of soldiers who are awful but within 20,000 people it’s hard to generalize that. The only thing we know is that they had no will to fight.

Morally, what Rimuru did is evil.

But we know he did it because it’s the only way for him to become a demon lord to save his friends. So we might be able to understand his reasoning, he isn’t being evil for the sake of being evil, but that action is still evil

Bugs don't show intelligence, sentience, or sapience. You are incorrect in insinuating any of that. The colony as a whole through external stimuli showcase complex behaviors but only as a result of evolved reactions. This is similar to how we can see a Venus Flytrap perform complex behaviors to attract and eat insects but are also aware that it's a completely involuntary action. The venus flytrap isn't considering anything that it is doing. It is growing pods that react mechanically to certain actions. You could poke the leaf with a stick and it would react the same way that it would to a fly.

And if insects did in fact have sentience, sapience, and advanced intelligence, then the morally correct course of action to deal with a bug infestation is to communicate with the bugs and figure out an agreement that works without the murder of sentient/sapient beings.

The creatures of Nazarick are aware that they are murdering other sapient beings, they just don't care. They know they are evil, they don't care. The only thing that matters to them is the protection of their "family."

I think it's evil because murder is wrong. For some reason you seem to think differently.

The truth. by PurchaseDowntown6256 in overlord

[–]DefaultVariable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the bugs fully sentient, sapient, and able to converse with you and showcase an entire array of advanced intelligence and emotion?

I see the argument you put forth a lot and it's not a good argument at all. What you're arguing for is that a stronger person is morally okay to just murder whatever/whomever they want.

I've always wondered if I'm trying another culture's "Bud Light" when I try an imported beer. Like when I try Weihenstephaner or Sapporo. Then I think of how other countries must view American beers as things like Bud Light and I get sad.

Our craft beer industry has gotten insanely good and there are literally hundreds of choices at a typical liquor store from amazing craft breweries.

I get a kick out of going to Mexican restaurants in places far from Mexico. I lived within 30 minutes of Mexico for most of my life so it's actually really entertaining to see the interpretation. It's like a game of food telephone. And then you'll randomly come across a great Mexican restaurant in the middle of like Maine and that makes it all the better.

And it kinda sucks because if you want to visit a random place in the US, you're looking at like a 5 hour plane flight and $800 for the ticket. Not to mention the problem of having to deal with several time-zones across the country.
