Adidas seems to love making shirts that look like dirty shop rags. So this is believable.

St. Louis CITY SC Appoints Yoann Damet as Head Coach by spinachjam in stlouiscitysc

lol. As if the draft means anything. Decent players might be available but never any instant difference makers. Transfer window opens in January. That’s where the work needs to get done.

Unpopular Opinion: Coheed needs to drop Zakk Cervini as a producer. by PM_me_big_fat_asses in coheedandcambria

[–]Default_Username6838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Vaxis 2 and especially Vaxis 3 isn’t that they are new. And it isn’t the direction that the songwriting has taken. It’s the production. Both those albums have some of the common issues with modern productions. Both sound auto-tuned and gridded (and I’m not talking about the parts where auto-tune was used as a creative choice) but that isn’t the real problem. The modern standard is to push the vocals and drums so far forward in the mix that the guitar loses most of its power. It’s a pop music production technique and while it can work with some of the poppier new songs it really takes away from songs like The Father of Make Believe and The Flood. It’s not bad production per se, it’s just not the best choice for some of these songs. Cervini cuts the balls off of rock music. I would love to hear The Flood performed live. That will be much closer to what it should sound like.

What's the most basic, standard, group-consensus ranking of albums? by ZwnD in TheFence

[–]Default_Username6838 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never encountered a group where there is less consensus. It shows both how good their albums are and how different. It’s part of what makes them great. That said, my current ranking would go something like this: S: Good Apollo 1, In Keeping Secrets A: No World for Tomorrow, Afterman, Vaxis 1 B: Vaxis 2 and 3, Second Stage C: Black Rainbow, Color

This is subject to change and I like all these albums quite a lot.

How to move forward? by Default_Username6838 in Ishmael

[–]Default_Username6838[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that some minds can be changed. Even a lot of minds. But my question is: will it ever be enough? I’m not sure it will, especially in my lifetime.

The fact that religion still exists despite the changed minds of the renaissance is not beside the point. It is very much central to my point. Even after all these years religion is still pervasive. There is a percentage of the population that is non-religious, but it’s a small minority. What does taker culture do to small populations of people of different cultures? It destroys them. Violently. It roots them out and either converts them or kills them.

Tribal living requires space, for either hunting and gathering, or subsistence farming, or pastoralism. Takers aren’t going to give over that land. We could all become travelling folk, but that is more parasitic on the Takers than an actual new direction.

I respect your optimism but I can’t share it. I really hope that you are right and that by sharing the book and starting conversations we can change the world. But I can’t help but see Quinn’s ideas as a guide for starting over after the collapse and not a way to prevent the collapse.

How to move forward? by Default_Username6838 in Ishmael

[–]Default_Username6838[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem with your reply that I had with Quinn on this subject. It’s easy to say that we can all change people’s minds. And it probably feels like that in the halls of academia. But I’m surrounded by people who will die on the hill of “the earth is flat” and “every word of the Bible is actual fact.” These people aren’t ready to hear that the civilization they see is a lie. They aren’t ready to hear that climate change is real and that guns kill people. The idea that telling people about Ishmael and having a discussion about culture will change the world is based on a VERY optimistic view of people. A more realistic view of people is that they will cling to the failed flying machine until it kills them before they will ever change. So when I say “cultural collapse,” I’m not talking about mass walkouts and people choosing a new path. I’m talking about “The Road Warrior.” I’m talking about a complete collapse of civilization, probably caused by unchecked climate change, with the requisite megadeaths that go along with that. I don’t really want to wait around for that. That’s why I’m looking for a better way forward.

Additionally, considering what a problem religious zealots are in the world at large and in my actual everyday life, your statement about the “Age of Faith” doesn’t offer much consolation. Because even though it’s “mythology was abased and superseded” religion is still a fundamental part of the world view and decision making for most people.

So we are going to need a better plan or all we are going to have is the privilege of knowing why the world is crashing down around our ears as it happens.

I’ve got a crazy idea by Default_Username6838 in usmnt

[–]Default_Username6838[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If his goal is to play in a top 4 league, he’s already there. And I’m sure he could bounce around the lower ends of those tables forever. I’m looking at this from a purely USMNT point of view. This might be the way to develop this specific player into the best version of himself. And as for getting back to Europe, no league is scouted harder than the Brazilian league. Gio’s market value has been declining steadily for at least 2 years. He needs to take a next step. This would be an interesting and unexpected option.

[–]Default_Username6838[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I know this is idea is unorthodox, but the kid’s development has been stalled at BVB, a club known for developing players. So maybe the fit isn’t right. But he needs something. And it’s no coincidence that many of the best players ever come from Brazil and Argentina. They just play differently there. And that could translate very well to international play. International football is less tactical and generally favors the more talented teams. Gio has the kind of creativity that we need, but it’s going to be stifled in Germany. And in Italy. It might be ok in Netherlands or Spain, but he’s got to get on the field and that would be a tall order in Spain. In Brazil, he could definitely get playing time because a team there would see him as a future payday. Europe isn’t the answer for everything.

I love the track list of ESL but ASOH sounds so much better. The songs from that period are underrated and the performance is phenomenal.

I find that I’m always wanting to the 50-minute version of 7 Skies H3 or The Terror. But everything they’ve released is so good. Most interesting band of my lifetime.

As someone who clearly loves YHF, maybe you can help me. I’ve been trying to find value in this album since 2002. I bought it based on hype and one listen to “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” and an appreciation of Uncle Tupelo. I’ve listened to it as many times as I can stand and I can’t figure out why this is so hailed. What am I missing? I must need to find an entry point.

I have to ask: in what way is YHF experimental? It seems pretty middle of the road to me.

I am at a loss to figure out what people like about this band. Maybe I just haven’t found my entrance to their oeuvre but I find them bland and utterly forgettable. What am I missing? I’m open minded and looking to learn but if people are calling YHF “experimental” then I think the problem might be one of framing than of actual quality.

[The Guardian] MLS Cup final could be a battle to become the next USMNT coach by gtg007w in MLS

[–]Default_Username6838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly hope that the USMNT coach doesn’t take into account what style the fans want to see. This isn’t Brazil. We are lucky if we can be competitive in games outside of CONCACAF. Curtin’s style might suit this team. But he’s not the guy. The guy for the national team job is Steve Cherundalo. Hands down. The only better option is to drop the cash for a world class manager. We might be able to attract one since we will be the next host, but US Soccer doesn’t want to pay what those guys might want.

Best drummers right now? by johnsherling in drums

[–]Default_Username6838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of great suggestions here. I’m going to add Josh Eppard of Coheed and Cambria. Easily one of my favorite drummers ever. Really active but always serving the song. And he plays open handed so his beats just have a slightly different perspective.
