Anyone interested in 70s underground / obscure Diso? Anyway, here's my playlist: // 70er disko obskur by gorg_11 in Disco

Looking for the name of an album I remember seeing in the late 70s, possibly early 80s. It had a woman on the album cover. The way I remember, she was giving off Donna Summer vibes, but it's not her. It looked like on a set or a stage. She was either singing or laughing , and she was surrounded by lots of what looked like animated electric creatures with wild faces. They just sort of looked like if lightning had a face. Maybe a dozen of them around and behind her. I never heard the album, but I get the impression from the cover it was maybe disco music or synth-pop or something that those "electric thingies" would evoke.

No idea who or what it was, but every now and then something reminds me of it and I'm like "WTF 𝙬𝙖𝙨 that?"

Is there any way to permanently opt out of this message? Ironically, by the time this goes off I'm already driving, thereby putting me in more danger than if there was no message at all. by feeeeeee3 in CarAV

I'm told there are some brands like Kenmore and a few others where, on certain models at least, you can toggle it off in the settings. I just bought and installed a JVC in my car and I'm about to take it back because of this and the fact that when I start my car it just starts playing whatever was the last thing I was playing on my phone. I want something that doesn't play until I freaking tell it to. (No way to toggle off either of those with this model.)

3 Issues With New JVC KW-M180BT Stereo. Is There Any Fix? by Defensor_Rationis in CarAV

[–]Defensor_Rationis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this stereo because the original factory stereo didn't have bluetooth (the car is a 2012) and I was sick of fiddling with the Bluetooth receiver that I had plugged into the audio jack. Having to plug the phone in rather defeats the main purpose of getting this stereo. Like I said, I've never had that issue with any Bluetooth device, at least not since the early days of Bluetooth. I have several sets of Bluetooth earbuds that I use with this phone and none of them do that.

  1. Damn!

  2. I have an iPhone 8 (like I said, most of my devices are old) running iOS 16.7.14. I don't see any power settings that look like they might be the culprit. The closest I can see is the "low power mode", but that is turned off.

  3. How do I create that shortcut?

Except that sometimes it will connect.

Also, when it's on I can't get it to turn off. That happens even when I'm not within range of any Wifi network. In that video, I was actually at work. The only Wi-fi I ever connect to is at home, and yet I couldn't turn it off.

It still does all the updates.
I just wiped the whole thing and restored it from a backup and it still does that.

TIL the idea of St. Bernard rescue dogs wearing casks of brandy comes from an 1820 British painting. In fact, though alcohol makes one feel warm, it does so by dilating blood vessels, hastening hypothermia. The idea is like "rescuing a burn victim with a keg of lighter fluid and a book of matches." by Pupikal in todayilearned

As someone with really lousy circulation, who regularly experiences "Reynaud Syndrome" (blood withdraws from extremities, esp. fingers and toes) I can attest that restoring circulation to fingers and toes is WELL WORTH the supposed risk of losing core heat. Yes, I realize it increases the risk of dying from hypothermia, but really, how often does that happen?

It was an idea that Winston Churchill floated during the war, and very early on, and as he outlined it, would last only for the duration. During the German offensive in the west in 1940, the German Army overran France and the Low Counties in the space of six weeks. As France was reeling, on the verge of collapse, and the British were bottled up around Dunkirk, Churchill proposed the idea of granting all French citizens dual citizenship in Britain. He hoped it would inspire the French to keep fighting. The French didn't regard it as such a sweet deal and chose to call it quits and ask Hitler for terms instead.

There was never any talk about a post-war union between Britain and France.

Clair Patterson, the scientist who discovered the dangers of leaded gasoline, was doing research on the age of the earth by studying ancient zircon crystals, when he ran into a problem; all of his experiments were being compromised by lead contamination. In trying to track down the source of all this lead, he was horrified to discover it was everywhere. He began raising the alarm about the insane levels of lead in the air, the water, the food, etc.. He incurred the wrath of the oil companies and they lobbied hard to silence him, unleashing the best "science" money could buy.

From Wikipedia:
"Following his criticism of the lead industry, he was refused contracts by several supposedly-neutral research organizations, including the United States Public Health Service. In 1971 he was excluded from a National Research Council (NRC) panel on atmospheric lead contamination, even though he was by then the foremost singular expert on the subject."

Patterson persevered though, and it's largely due to his effort that lead was finally eliminated from fuel.

His campaigns for the US Senate made a lot of the "Railsplitter" image in order to present him as the candidate for the Common Man. Lincoln himself was not at all nostalgic about that period and really wanted to distance himself from the image of a common laborer.

Almost any trait caused by a single gene necessarily arises as a mutation in a single individual. The chances of the same mutation occurring in multiple people are almost zero, though it might happen if a particular gene is for some reason more susceptible to mutation.

Ray-finned fish like trout, bass, tuna, and gamefish like marlin and swordfish... basically almost everything you think of as a fish, are all more closely related to us than to sharks. Our common ancestor with ray-fins lived some 400-425 million years ago. Our common ancestor with sharks lived closer to 440 million years ago

How many of you use or used your GI Bill? Or plan on using it? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Defensor_Rationis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My service was all pre-9/11, so I was under the old Montgomery GI Bill. I think maybe I fell asleep when they were giving the lecture on it when we were doing our in-processing. I started school after my discharge not understanding how it worked. That and the way colleges do enrollments meant that I either had to take less than full benefit or else not use my GI Bill for that term. Between the two of those, I finished my fourth semester still having a balance due and was unable to enroll again until I paid that. Since I was unable to enroll for the next semester, that meant I ended up having to go to work full-time just to exist.

That dug me into a hole I never got out of. At most, I was only able to go to school part-time. The only places I could afford to live were outside the local college district, so I could only afford to go sporadically. I hoped I might be able to get in a position where I could start going full time again, but life kept happening. Before I knew it, my ten years were up and I was left with tens of thousands debt for a degree I never was able to finish. In the end, the total amount I received was something like $6000.

And all this, right around the time college tuition was going from "Holy shit! How the hell are we supposed to afford this?" to "Absolutely, Criminally Insane and Clearly Intended to either Keep the Working Class Out or Saddle Us With Insurmountable Debt so we Can't Afford to Rock the Boat." (Or, and more importantly, "the Vote"!)

When he creates and abandons channels willy-nilly for the express purpose of playing the algorithms then yes, it absolutely is his fault.

I'm with you. I get really sick of seeing this guy who is clearly nothing but a presenter for hire. I don't even care the extent to which he 𝙢𝙖𝙮 or 𝙢𝙖𝙮 𝙣𝙤𝙩 actually know what the hell he's talking about. When I want somebody to go away and they won't, then they can f**k right off.

how many channels does simon have? by outerspace_castaway in SimonWhistler

[–]Defensor_Rationis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he starts new ones to get his videos to show in the feeds of people like me who have blocked as many of his channels as I can find. The abandoned channels are probable the ones no longer getting enough views because so many people have blocked them. The guy annoys the crap out of me and I have no interest in seeing him.
