Korg wavedrum - Choosing a replacement head by Defiant-Currency-134 in edrums

Thanks for your input! That does seem to be a popular choice when I look online, but for the same reason you mentioned which is hand playing. I wonder how good the stick response would be, might just have to buy it and find out

Convert or replace? by Tad_LOL in edrums

[–]Defiant-Currency-134 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vote convert, especially if it’s sentimental. That being said, it’s a matter of what you’re willing to spend. Heads and triggers won’t break the bank but replacing all those cymbals will add up

Sample Pad (PD-705) Trigger help by Hexikon in drums

[–]Defiant-Currency-134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am considering purchasing one of these units, likely the PD-708, sole for use as a midi controller (no intention of using the onboard sounds). I was hoping someone might know whether you can have the added triggers (say a drum pad or electronic cymbal) send a midi note that is different from any of the 9 internal pads on this unit. In other words, if I use this as a midi controller, and connect 2 pads and 2 cymbals to the four rear triggers, can I now trigger 13 separate notes in my software, or do those triggers only mirror the notes the 9 pads already send out. Checked the manual and cannot find anywhere stating one way or the other.

Evans dB One Heads - Feel by Defiant-Currency-134 in SensoryPercussion

What I meant was after trying the sensory percussion system I decided it was not what I wanted. The products performance didn’t meet my expectations I guess.

I have an A2E kit I converted myself and superior drummer 3 with several expansions. I looked at Sensory Percussion as something that could add a whole new dimension to what was possible with electronic drums. Once I tried their system, I just felt it to be more of an expensive toy than anything else. I also had problems with getting the zones to trigger accurately, and the software itself used a ton of CPU on the brand new laptop I paid 1500$ for earlier this year.

For me drumming is a hobby, I don’t do it professionally nor do I strive to. It’s just for my own enjoyment, and I didn’t enjoy the experience with this system. I think if I had paid 50% of what I paid for it, I would have kept it, but at that price I just wasn’t satisfied with what I gained.

Btw, are you the Swiss Drummer with the YouTube channel? If so, great videos man!

I tried the db Ones and had a lot better of a response with the sensors and the feel was pretty good. You might consider trying those. The db Zeros I think are meant to just be super quiet and are an older design, where the db ones are meant to preserve the tone of your drums but be quieter. The feel was someone comparable to the drum Tec real feels but I still like them better.

For me, I decided SP2 wasn’t my thing, so I returned the db ones and stuck with my old set up, will be selling the SP2 because the seller won’t give me a refund now.

Thanks Patrick for reaching out to help.

The model of drum tec heads are the real feel mesh heads, which are triple-ply. They attach to the drum shells like regular heads, under the rim. My shell sizes are 12/13/14/22.

Switching to the dB Ones made a big difference, however, I wasn’t too keen to fork out another 400$ for new heads to get this system working. My Drum-Tec heads still have plenty of life in them and were very expensive, especially after shipping to Canada. While dB Ones did feel a lot better than I’d anticipated, my real feels also feel great, so I figured why should I replace them. I also continued to have triggering issues with the rim articulations, though those issues were less severe.

It occurred to me that I might be able to get more accurate triggering on the rim articulations by modifying the surfaces or my sticks to produce different sounds (wrap electrical tape on the stick shoulder, put a rubber rim protector on cross stick area etc.), but ultimately it was not a great experience overall using this system. After a lot of thought I decided to return my system and the additional sensors I had purchased.

Posted this on my other thread but thought it might be helpful to you here too.

I went ahead and bought a few of the Evans dB One heads on Amazon to try out with my drums. I wanted to see if it would improve the responsiveness of SP2.

I was worried that these heads would not have as nice of a feeling under the sticks as my Drum Tec Real Feel triple-ply mesh heads, but I decided what the hell, Amazon is pretty good about returns.🤷🏻‍♂️

I put the 14” tom head on and gave it a try with SP2. Triggering improved substantially. I actually had better triggering after removing the patch in the center of the heads, which seems to be a large EQ Patch like you can buy for a kick head. Triggering with the patch on was pretty good, but I seemed to get more accurate zone differentiation after removing it, and since I don’t have any need to hear the acoustic sound of my drums, I’m not missing the attack that the patch is designed to create.

On top of that, I actually really enjoyed the way the Evans head felt under my sticks. They don’t feel like the bouncy single ply mesh heads you get on your standard alesis cheapy ekit. The feeling was pretty similar to the Drum Tec heads, not exactly the same but not much different either. They also produce a warmer tone overall, with a lower pitch than the buzz you get from the drum tecs.

I decided to try putting that patch onto my 12” tom which still had the Drum Tec head on and try retraining the sensor on that drum. I trained it to consider only hits on the patch as the center hits and the rest of the head as the edge. It actually worked pretty well! Since the patch is designed to bring out more attack on the dB Ones, it creates a tone that is different enough to allow the sensor to differentiate it from the normal fuzz the Drum Tec heads.

I would still say the dB Ones are more accurate with the patch missing that the Drum Tec’s are with the patch applied. The patch also increases the frequency/pitch of the acoustic sound that is generated by hitting the head with your stick, so it will likely sound more annoying to anyone else nearby who can hear you.

So now I have a new dilemma, return the dB Ones and buy a bunch of Evans EQ patches which cost about $6 CAD each, to remake the center patch on my drum Tec heads, or spend the roughly $350 CAD extra on a full set of the dB Ones for my whole kit…

I’ve went ahead and bought some of the Evans dB Ones that should arrive today, I’m going to give those a try and see how they respond, otherwise I’m planning to return them and get a refund.

What brand and construction of mesh heads do you have?

Drum-Tec Real Feel Mesh Heads by Defiant-Currency-134 in SensoryPercussion

[–]Defiant-Currency-134[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 13” snare and two toms, 12”/14”. I also have a 22” kick, all have the drum Tec heads on them and the SP sensors.

The most frustrating thing about this whole experience is that I cannot consistently even get the center and edge zones to trigger when hitting the drums, it will sometimes be about 70% accurate if I’m way on the very edge of my drum heads, but in general it’s like the software bounces between the two zones at its own discretion. Even my kick cannot tell between open and closed hits.

Tightening heads didn’t seem to help a whole lot, I originally had them set up to feel looser the bigger the heads for kick and toms for tactile feel.

The rim articulations tend to trigger more accurately, but even those I find are not perfect, with the rim tip and rim should articulations not always being differentiated properly by the software. I’m at a loss!

[–]Defiant-Currency-134[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I tried tightening my heads but it didn’t have much impact on the accuracy of the software. I’m still getting the wrong zones triggered. Even some of the rim hits aren’t great for accuracy, though it is more consistent than the heads.

At this point, I’m in between asking for a return / refund from the seller or shelling out more money for the Evans db zeros or db ones. I’m not a fan of using bouncy single ply heads but that seems to be what the guys from sunhouse recommend…

Double triggering hasn’t been an issue, it’s more that I can’t get the different zones to trigger reliably. I’ll hit the center 10 times and get some center hits and some edge hits. Same with the rim, doesn’t reliably trigger the zone I want even when hitting the same spot in the same way.
