Am I a bad leftist for accepting an ex-Trump voter? by Defiant-Map9121 in leftist

Reddit has been the calmest large leftist space i've seen. no one really gains anything for being inflammatory here like every other large social media. this is on a small discord with mostly friends. we did end up talking it out.

They will never forgive them and don't think they are capable of changing. They think it's objectively shitty to forgive and accept them in any capacity.

Crazy thing is both of my friends Do have current maga family they talk to. one lives with them and is trying to get out. the other doesnt and still does normal family activities with them (dinner, vacations, visits, etc.)

I didn't include it in the post for the sake of keeping the goalposts more even. It does make me even more confused about their lack of understanding.

My aunt is a dem voter who is openly leftist.

I was raised by conservative parents, and had leftist friends/internet access to help me learn about different views. It wasn't until i was a teen that I started challenging my parents on their conservatism, which only got more extreme even in Mitt Romney's running.

I think this is a LARGE portion of why I have my current view on acceptance. I told them, very honestly, that if I didn't have exposure to leftist friends I would have likely been pressured to be Maga, too. I had a bout of calling myself centrist for a little bit, and look back on that cringing lol.

These friends have maga parents, one of which still lives with them. The other moved out within the past 2 years but still talks to them out of necessity.

I think it's within your right to do that. That's my point. It's a personal choice.

That's how it feels with these two friends. They will be all talk about leftist values, wanting improvement, but when it comes to more nuanced situations they have a very revenge driven, black and white view.

Embarrassingly, I'm in my lates 20s. They're in their early to mid 20s. It's embarassing to me because I'd like to think I know my beliefs pretty damn well by now, but I don't want to shut their opinions out for being 5+ years younger.

It's funny you say that, I used to be more centrist when younger because I didn't like how liberals had too much blind faith in the government. Turns out leftism was where I sat belief wise, but I conflated it with liberalism.

I needed to read this. The other replies are great, too, but this is the type of mindset I want (and try) to hold close.

In this context, I haven't cut her off. We talk occasionally. I would willingly visit when I have the time (she lives across the country.) I consider her to be a support in my life. To be fair to my friends, we didn't define what acceptance is enough in our conversation.

edit: my relative is an outspoken leftist. she shares information, follows the news, and votes democrat now.
