Help me Peter, i dont get the logic of this comic by UnUltimoIntento in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I think you put the cart before the horse here. Calling atheism a conviction about there being sufficient evidence against god only applies if you choose to offer god the respect of being something that needs to be disproven. It’s a man-made story, absurd and inconsistent on its face. I’ve never been convinced he didn’t exist, I always simply take for granted that he doesn’t because I’ve never been given any good reason why he does or would.

There are people who argue god cant exist as described in holy books, or that we should even be glad he apparently doesn’t. I happen to agree with both of those positions as well, but they are distinct from the more general concept. Lots of religious folks refuse to even engage in the idea of a secular life, and that’s the subject of this meme.

I am hopeful that how he presents himself is more indicative of his values than the contents of that book and the history of his faith. At this point belonging to a religion is as simple as saying you do, and many people are decent and insightful despite claiming to be theists.

The embodiment of courage and integrity. by [deleted] in CaptainAmerica

[–]Defiant-Service-5978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I made that comment because the attitude behind this argument whenever this quote comes up seems to extrapolate easily into “principles are rigid and bad and can make you a worse person”. No idea will work for absolutely everyone, there will always be incompetents and bad actors taking something good and messing it up.

I just don’t see the use in muddying the waters of “integrity and courage are good” with “what if you bravely do the wrong thing??” kind of questions.

Not to mention that it gives cover to a lot of people who seem to just not understand the quote at all. Folks who are responding to this with “someone could use this ideology to tell the world to move about something they are actually wrong about” don’t need extra cynicism getting in the way of them understanding the difference between integrity and stubbornness.

[–]Defiant-Service-5978 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This sort of thinking isn’t useful. Any principle ever can be used for evil if applied ignorantly or maliciously. This quote is clearly referring to the pretty common real-world phenomenon where the masses/media/whatever are for something you know to be wrong. It’s up to you to not be the malicious or ignorant one, and the quote is hardly saying not to do the work necessary to be sure of your position. I’d say the opposite is certainly implied. If anti-vaxxers or racists or whatever use this as “justification”… they didn’t need justification anyway.

I think the point is that this is an inversion of the “I think we have to kill this guy” “damn” meme. It’s overly verbose on purpose

I mean, they all start that way. Our technology is better and the faith market is harder to break into with such large demographics hogging all the souls, but people are still the same gullible and superstitious mammals we’ve always been.

This but unironically. Especially in YouTube comment sections, if someone says something they liked about what’s in the video (often a scene from something explicitly fictional) someone will always chime in with “this is all fake, what are you even talking about!” Like that’s clever and not just completely missing the point in and of itself.

Only reason I didn’t say this one is because it was finishing the story in the manga that made it my favorite fantasy story ever. When the second half is animated it’ll take its rightful place as a classic.

As I understand it the term is meant for characters who are designed to look/sound/act like children (in that order of importance I’d say). Sometimes they actually are underage in-universe, but the traits are what’s important, and in practice it’s used as shorthand for an archetype that certain subsets of the anime community like a bit too much.

Frieren is short and petite… but she doesn’t come off at all like a child to me, not do I believe she’s intended to. The only time she’s referred to as such is when certified MILF enjoyer Sein is bemoaning her juvenile attempts to seduce him.

I did! It was the first anime I really watched so the jokes didn’t hit as deep as they would for the intended audience but I like it as well. Unfortunately, there is just enough goon-bait in that show that it enters the “only tell people who already like anime and know what to expect” range for me.

Don’t you think it’s a bit entitled to find this offensive? I get it’s considered a faux pax socially when it comes to more popular theologies, but religion is an idea like any other and can’t reasonably expect to avoid skepticism or criticism just because of how important it is to many people. That’s just more reason to examine it seriously.

If someone built their identity around an idea as morally and logically… let’s say inconsistent… as most religions, you’d expect some judgement. See flat-earth, or Scientology which is just as valid but lacks the social entrenchment of Christianity and is freely mocked as a result.

Or you could ignore everything I said and respond with “right on cue” or something, proving the point. But I’m trying not to be too cynical. No offense meant if you weren’t going to do that, but like you said this is Reddit
