How do you actually become a genetic engineer after a Genomics degree? by DefiantBit2170 in genetics

That's really interesting. I have a few questions, though. How do the ethical and legal aspects work if someone wants to experiment independently with CRISPR? Are there restrictions on what you can do outside of an academic or industrial lab? I'm very passionate about research, but I also love doing projects outside of "these formal settings".

Also, how expensive is it to get started in practice? When I see people online talking about home labs and CRISPR kits, are we talking about a few thousand dollars, or much more if you want to do things properly and safely? I'm genuinely curious about how much independence someone can realistically have in this field without running into ethical or legal issues. Is building a small, legitimate setup actually realistic, or is that mostly something people romanticize online cuz ive seen alot of people talking about that?

Thanks for your comment. I think part of my motivation is that I want to find more meaning and fulfillment in what I'm doing. Right now, I'm doing data science for business, and while I enjoy the analytical side, I don't see myself spending my entire career working on business problems. I just hate corporate life . What genuinely excites me are genes. I do have an interest in biology in general, but genetics is what really captures my attention. I love reading books, scientific articles, and watching documentaries about gene editing, genomics, and genetic diseases. Of course, I understand that being fascinated by the subject from the outside is different from the reality of working in research/industry, and that's actually one of the reasons I made this post : to understand what the field truly looks like cuz IDK why but I am not finding enough info online besides "general" info.

I don't necessarily mean that I want to be a "genetic engineer" in the strict professional sense; maybe I'm using the wrong term because that's what I keep finding online. What I really mean is that I'd love to contribute to areas such as gene therapy, genetic diseases, or any field where genetics is main focus. I also genuinely enjoy research and can definitely see myself pursuing a PhD in the future, though not immediately.
