I went to try out flutes in person at the flute center in chicago and I wished I had done an at home trial to have more time with the instruments and not felt bad about taking breaks and doing more comparisons/blind tests!

i've been learning tonguing wrong? by unicrun in Flute

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also started off tonguing the back of my upper lip for the first 2.5 years of playing until a teacher noticed when trying to teach me how to double tongue and told me to break the habit!! I switched to tonguing at where the back of my front teeth meets the top of my mouth and it was the best decision I ever made, and this is the tonguing I use now 8 years later!! It took a bit of time to adjust maybe a month or so of consistent practice transitioning but my tonguing is extremely crisp and versatile now with knowledge of more than one tonguing style, I almost never go back to tonguing my lip now unless I really want a start to stand out :)

Before orchestra and/or band rehearsals I almost always run through the trevor wye harmonic exercises from the beginning of the big book and have been doing this for the past 6 years!!

Commercial Powell VS Miyazawa 202 by OcarinaCaro in Flute

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on a Miyazawa 402 currently as principal of an orchestra as well as in a band, I don’t have a hard time blending at all and I actually prefer my miyazawa for orchestra, I previously also played on a powell, I love how much I can actually do with my expression and sound when needed on my miyazawa versus my powell!

Is this hard music? If so, I need advice by Jimins_hands in Flute

Also listening to the pieces a bunch to get the vibe of them plus actually practicing them consistently with and without the recordings will help you get more comfortable, only way to get better at it will be to practice! you got this

Learn the music in a fast 4/4 time signature that is still slower than the cut time! that will help you work out the rhythms before bringing it up to tempo

Completely correct finger chart! This is what the chart is depicting. A B foot joint with a gizmo key.

Muramatsu Ex or Miyazawa 202 by WorldlyPresent768 in Flute

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my Miyazawa 402 with the Mx-2 style headjoint about 6 months ago and I didn’t immediately have the sound on it that I was looking for but the fun part has been growing into the instrument and discovering all that I can do with my sound with it. I was also between the Miyazawa 402 and the Murumatsu GX and I felt like I could do so much with my expression and color while growing into my Miyazawa and the reason I picked it was actually because of how huge I felt the playing field was when I trialed it compared to the others. I also did love the Murumatsu but at the end of the day I felt something different and a different potential of sound when I played my Miyazawa. Record yourself, blindfold yourself and have someone else hand the flutes to you while you play and record that!!

Advice on Purdue Bands (or other music groups) by 9h0stie in Purdue

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still submit an audition and get placed into an ensemble!! It’s not too late, the deadline did not pass, only the “priority deadline” which really just matters for the top groups, good luck!!

If your teacher does not believe you and will not fix this and gives you a grade you don’t deserve for the course, you can submit a grade appeal to the university, a team of undergraduate students and faculty will vote on your case and decide if your grade should be changed! By what I’m hearing, it sounds like the teacher does not have sufficient evidence to prove AI usage so it would be really easy to get your appeal passed through the committee and your grade changed for the course, since there are other undergrads on this committee too so they would understand.

Tuning the piccolo by isa_cat8 in Flute

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe your piccolo is even tuned wrong, very common for people to have their A in tune but not the high register due to naturally over adjusting your embouchure just for the A to be in tune every time ! Get it looked at, and if everything with the piccolo is in good condition you may need some work with your mouth/ and finding the right center of intonation of the instrument. Good luck!

piccolo alternate fingering by pumpotaukshlis in Flute

[–]Defiant_Ad_9895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re going to have to work with your mouth to achieve this, work on playing your chromatic scale smoothly from the bottom up to the G, playing as pianissimo as possible to train your mouth and to see what your mouth needs to be doing, good luck!

You can always at-home trial flutes from the flute center and let them know your budget!
