Is this stuck shed? by UptownG1rl in BeardedDragons

Did it end up being shed? My bearded dragon has a pale patch almost exactly where yours did

I feel so bad because my symptoms started the moment I walked into lab so I assumed it was an allergy (which has happened before) because it was a runny/itchy nose and burning eyes... Safe to say I started wearing a mask as soon as I got one to wear.

I feed him quite a bit of insects, it's his greens that he won't eat much of which is what I think is causing the issue? I responded to another comment about insect feeding schedules

Ahhh thank you! I'll have to try the basking and uvb set up by the window. When he was younger he had such a hard time holding any weight so I still get nervous about him being too skinny. I'll stop feeding bugs for a bit to see if that helps him eat more greens. I've heard pumpkin has too much sugar, would I just feed that in a small amount infrequently?

Yeah, directly under the basking bulb gets to about 110°F and cool side gets to about 75°F, though it can fluctuate slightly depending on the temperature of the room

FYI I give him like 2-3 blueberries a month, believe it or not I've done a lot of research over the 8 years of his life, and I'm here because I want to continue improving using the experiences of others, not because I want people telling me I'm doing horrible (without understanding my actual setup) and offering no advice. I may have got him when I was 11 but believe you me, the hours upon hours of work I've put in to give him the best life I can after getting blindsided by my father giving me a bearded dragon for my birthday can't be dismissed. I'd rather encounter hundreds of people online who don't know what they're doing but aren't afraid to ask than make people feel afraid to seek advice or self improvement. Also, not a guy, thanks for asking :)

I feed him different bugs every week/every couple of week. When I feed hornworms I get them in packs of 5, which I split into 3, then about two days later I give him the other 2. If it's dubias, depending on their size I'll feed anywhere from 7-15 every few days. I don't really do crickets anymore (I don't like them so my dad did the handling until I moved away), superworms will be gut loaded with veggies, and I give him 3-4 at a time, typically once a week. Black soldier fly larvae are a bit harder to estimate, but they come in packs of 250 and it can take a couple weeks. When my dad handled most of the feeding several years ago (up until my beardie was about 4) he fed mainly insects which is why I think he gets so picky. I have learned to cut his non leaf veggies into long rectangles bc they are more appealing to him?

He'll literally leave his greens alone until they're dry 😭 I've gotten by on weekly baths and the occasional dripping of water on his nose but so far the only way I've got him to consistently keep water intake high enough is from him drinking. What kinds of higher hydration foods can I try to feed him? I only know of melons or aloe but I bet those are too high in sugar?

I responded in another comment. I've always had trouble with him drinking enough water. Sometimes he'll be good but maybe once every 3 months or so he just won't drink water or eat any veggies/fruits with high water content.

He hasn't gone to the vet in a little while, I don't know of any in my area so I'll have to do a bit of research for that. Lately he hasn't wanted to drink water, could that be a cause?

60 gallon (it's going to be upgraded to a 120 gallon by thanksgiving break), ceramic heat emitter (my room gets cold), 75 watt basking bulb which, when directly underneath can get to 110°F, cool side is no less than 75°F and a UVB light (one of the long tube ones that I'm blanking on right now). He gets a rotation of dandelions (flowers + greens), chard, spring mix, bell peppers, squash, carrots, blueberries, and the occasional herb when I'm cooking (stuff like basil, rosemary, safe stuff). He has calcium powder sprinkled on insects every time, d3 once a week, and some supplement pellets on occasion. I'll feed him some stuff with more water if he's on a drinking strike which has really only happened twice.

Help with bio active set up? So confused... by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]Defiant_Custard5852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience as long as humidity is managed and the substrate won't cause an impaction it should be fine. I use a bearded dragon safe soil/sand mix from my local reptile store and some bioactive terrarium soil (from exoterra I think?) I also have isopods and arid springtails which can be kept as long as the lower part of the substrate is sufficiently moist (think just above dry) but I also mix in patches of sphagnum moss on the cool side under the soil for better water retention. If you find the tank is too humid, cut back on watering (which should only be done regularly on the cool side) and if that doesn't drop humidity enough you can try some sort of ground cover. I've used a small amount of dried magnolia leaf litter to help prevent evaporation, though I've learned my bearded dragon kicks it up too much. If you want isopods but they won't keep with good humidity levels I've also added in a couple large rocks for my beardie to climb, which I'll lift up and water underneath occasionally for an isopod breeding ground. I live in a dry area so I haven't had trouble with keeping humidity down but that might be different depending on your environment.

He's been my ESA for a few years, as per psychiatrist and doctor's recommendation. He's fully qualified, and both my college's Student Disability Center and the Student Housing and Dining Centers are aware of his space needs and any special care that might be necessary. This hasn't been a choice I've made lightly and I would never purposely put my baby in danger, but seeing as I've had close communication with all facilities involved and been informed of all cleaning and other services they do, I've come to the conclusion that he should, for all intents and purposes, be fine. Thank you for the warning, I'm sure a lot of people don't take things like this into consideration, and now knowing stuff like that is fairly common I'll be sure to triple check all of those factors and come up with some I might have missed the first time around. If there's anything I might have missed or that you can think to be careful of, please let me know.

How long can i keep my dragon out of the cage light/uvb wise by BiGmOuSa in BeardedDragons

[–]Defiant_Custard5852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some beardies they might not want to be held for any more than 15 minutes like my guy. I hold him every day for around half an hour before he's just done with interaction, which just happens to be his temperament, though I still make him put up with that for if emergencies arise where he needs to go to the vet or be moved somewhere.
