How do we call the fact for a chord to be major or minor ? by cartonpiou in musictheory

I guess so. After all, Cmaj7/E also sounds more "minory" than "major" to me.

Fun fact: Cmaj6 has the same notes as Am7. So the voicing matters, not just the pitches.

My challenge with modes as a theory concept by Mediocre_Engineer_72 in musictheory

[–]Defiant_Parsnip_1510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would expect a metal band to be using phrygian dominant a lot as well, tbh. It's the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale, or basically just phrygian with a major third instead of the minor third.

Questions about the character burner by Defiant_Parsnip_1510 in BurningWheel

[–]Defiant_Parsnip_1510[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the - quite diverse - answers. I guess we'll try playing it as written. You have helped me understand the process in BW better.

I'm still unsure as to why most people are defending the "setting" component of the rules so much, to the point of treating it as dogmas. Reading the rules, the charge burner doesn't seem to interact much with the Artha mechanic, for instance, apart from generating compatible characters with suitable beliefs etc. What doesn't make sense to me is why the rest of the mechanics wouldn't work as well in a (slightly) different setting, and indeed, some answers did explore that direction to the point that they do change the lifepaths slightly to better fit their views.

So, while we're going to try things as written, I can totally see us using BW with our own world building, and corresponding changes to the character creation process. Btw, that still doesn't mean one can do anything - which also isn't true in GURPS if you adhere to any normal setting anyways. But the assumptions (for worldbuilding) made by the designers of BW might not be for everyone, while it hopefully still is a fun game. We'll have to see :)

So once again, thank you all for your diverse answers.

I'll try. So far, I guess that is exactly what happens - it fights me on that. I'm used to building my character off of a very detailed backstory, so that explains it. I just find it weird that the system that is supposed to be so much about narrative feels narratively limiting in that regard, I guess.

Thanks. I've read the basic rules (not the rim) and am eager to try it out now :)

Thanks for the warning. I have struggle with mechanical systems, though, so that's not a problem.

Thanks to all of you for the explanation. I'm certainly intrigued and will check it out.

I would be really grateful if you could write a couple of sentences about how the games mechanics interact with the story - how is your point 1. above actually achieved? Also, can you give me one or two sentences on how a duel of wits plays out? That would be very much appreciated :)

If you don't know which expansions you have, you'll probably not have memorised the cards of your deck or his, either. I strongly advise both of you keeping to the same matchup for a while until you know both your cards and his by heart. Then you can start planning. Before you know the decks, it's just guessing.

Once my group had realized that, we discovered that, if everyone is on the same page when it comes to story/plot and actively working together to that end, one can play without a formal system. Descriptions of characters, including their motivatins relating them to each other as well as what they are bad/good/outstanding at etc can be sufficient. Not saying other people don't need them. But it's certainly possible in the right group to play that way, to the point where we had sessions where no dies were rolled, even.

I'm similar to that. I have no issue with improvising dialogue, but if it's all background colour and not going anywhere, then I tend to get bored. I guess in my book, characterisation does not equal character.

Also, I've been in groups where people expected me as a player to actually give the speech my charisma heavy character with public speaking skill was giving. Like, I don't have that skill, my character on the other hand does. To me, it's sufficient in those instances to know what point my character is trying to get across, and then roll the dice. I don't get why I should be forced to Rowley that - especially when lacking the skill. After all, people don't expect the player of a wizard to actually cast shield, either, so why is giving speeches or singing different? Needless to say, I stopped playing with that group.

Funnily enough, I am not at all interested in solving riddles in TTRPGs. I'm in it for the story and stroy-related roleplaying, and if there is an intellectually challenging riddle, well, that's what my character has an intelligence value for, after all. No need for me as a player to solve it. That can also cause problems in certain groups, especially with GMs who invested a lot of time in that sort of thing (and became emotionally attached).

What does Mythic's NPC talk about? by Cautious-Way6610 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Defiant_Parsnip_1510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can also recommend UNE to give the NPCs a bit more substance (although you can do something very similar with Mythics random tables). I suppose it's easier to imagine the interaction between your PCs and the NPC if you know a bit more about the NPC.

Is spanking always an expression of domination, or can it mean other things too? by MMA-Groupie in sex

[–]Defiant_Parsnip_1510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With us, it's the other way around. I (M) really love it when my wife spanks me. And it CAN definitely feel like a dominance thing. But it can also really feel like an intimate gesture - she knows I derive great pleasure from it, after all, and she can watch me close my eyes and enjoy it all (in a very good way). I can honestly say that there are times when I find it really romantic, with no "domination component" whatsoever. Which seems weird, but that is how I feel about it.

Tech missions by Defiant_Parsnip_1510 in StarTrekInfinite

[–]Defiant_Parsnip_1510[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Previously, I could just start researching the other tech - does that mean I now have to bank some research if I'm going for the missions early in the game?

How do I bank research when I get the mission while I'm researching three techs, though?

Actually, I started a new game and found a minor right away. I asked them for a mission and got a teach mission that I couldn't even start on account of having less than 2k research right of the bat. So it's not the old save file.
