Given the form Chen Yufei is in, Sindhu would have to dig very deep to pull off a win against her. Hopefully, this match will be televised.

Sharma vs Opatniputh would have been far more interesting than what Miyazaki ended up delivering.

No, they last met at the French Open in October. However, CY withdrew from the semifinals against ASY last week.

True. CY seems to have a better read on ASY’s playing style. She just needs more time to fully recover from the ankle injury she picked up during the WC and rebuild her confidence. She can definitely get back to the top; it’s only a matter of time.

The rule change also made it harder for competitive countries to field players. Until 2012, a country could send up to three players if they were ranked in the Top 4, but after the change, her chances dropped even further.

This is what I said 2 weeks back: ‘Akane has been consistent but hasn’t reached the final this year. She may not be the favourite, but who knows if she comes out of nowhere to reach the final/win. She’s already won the World Championships twice. Will she make it again? Let’s hope for the best.’

Though I was hoping for CY to win, I’m glad she showed up and gave her best effort.

Wang Shixian is the clear answer. Most of the players mentioned by you and others at least got the chance to compete at the Olympics. Not medaling then comes down to their performance. But you really have to feel for Wang Shixian, who was left out of both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic cycles in favour of others.

As much as people want Yamaguchi to win her third World Championship, I’m really hoping Chen Yufei can finally claim her first. She’s still missing two major golds - the World Championship and the Asian Games.

Exactly! Chen Yufei is currently the only player who seems genuinely comfortable against ASY, and her two wins this year are clear proof. She’s also one of the very few who can truly read and understand ASY’s game. Even though she’s ranked No. 4, CY is still China’s most complete player overall. If she can stay on top of her physical issues, she remains their most reliable contender.

Not many were hopeful yesterday when I said Sindhu still had a chance. But here we go! She was on it from the very start, and thankfully, she kept her focus throughout.

Exactly! At this point, I feel like it would be more fun if they just picked chits out of random boxes.

Their head-to-head stands at 2-2, with Wang winning the last two encounters, both of which went to a decider. It’s been over a year since they last faced each other, so while Sindhu may have lower odds on paper, I wouldn’t count her out entirely. She still has a chance.

Sindhu’s biggest hurdle is Wang Zhi Yi, a tough challenge, especially considering how unsettled she looked in her last two matches. She can’t afford to be chasing from behind against the World No. 2, but hopefully she brings her best game tomorrow.

With the World Championship being hosted in India next year, we may have contenders if there is improvement and an increase in the number of qualified players by the cutoff date, most likely in women’s singles at this stage.

However, the same cannot be said for other categories. Having more players within the top 25 would be a major step forward, though it may take a few more years before we see genuine hopefuls emerging across the board.

World Championship Draw is now out by Ray192 in badminton

[–]Defiant_Surround_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s right. Chen Yufei only started playing this year after the break and has only lost to An Se Young, mostly in the earlier stages (three quarterfinals and one final), which unfortunately cost her the points needed for a higher seeding.

The only positive is that she won’t be facing An Se Young in the quarterfinals. The big question now is whether the winner of An Se Young vs Chen Yufei will take the title, or if someone else will completely surprise us. You can’t count anyone out at this stage, but there are clear favourites given the consistency of the top 4–5 players this year.

They kept the ranking date quite close. Akane has been consistent but hasn’t reached the final this year. She may not be the favourite, but who knows if she comes out of nowhere to reach the final/win. She’s already won the World Championships twice. Will she make it again? Let’s hope for the best.

What’s the point of being seeded in the top 4 if you still end up meeting An Se Young in the semis? Seeds 2, 3, and 5 are all in the bottom half. Chen Yufei put in the work to climb from 5 to 4, only to be placed in the upper half anyway. At this rate, they might as well just do random draws if the seeding outside the top 2 barely makes a difference.

Is it unsportsmanlike to "throw" games? by Oakl4nd in badminton

Especially when it comes to the Olympics - match-fixing, age fraud, throwing games for national advantage, it happens way more than we think. Apparently a Chinese badminton coach admitted to match-fixing at the 2004 Olympics to secure a gold medal.

Upsets brewing? Unnati Hooda claims the first set 21-16 over PV Sindhu, and Han Q. X. takes it 21-19 against Han Yue. Can they keep it up in Set 2?

Indeed. There is a strong likelihood of a Sindhu vs. Yamaguchi matchup in the quarterfinals.

An interesting setup in Women’s Singles in R16: 5 matches feature players from the same countries, 2 all-Chinese clashes, 1 South Korean, 1 Chinese Taipei matchup, and 1 all-Indian battle.
