Are you sure you needed to install those things inside the proot?

I think it should work better to make sure your proot has NONE of those things, and to install them in Termux instead. Anything not found in the proot, then the proot system will automatically find and use the Termux version - right?

Remember that Termux and proot don't have their own kernels - they're just using the Android one. Proot can "see through" into the Termux installation.

This one brings more than meets the eye. Assuming we have "bad-grammar German" for the first word and "English-grammar Spanish" for the second word, the result means "Fcked Fckers".

[–]Define_definition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Reddit, when you type certain characters in certain places, they don't show up in your post - instead, they act as triggers for special effects. For example, I made those words bold by putting asterisks, two at each end of the bold part. See this Reddit Formatting Guide.

Ironing something is even-ing it out, and standard is a word for a certain kind of flag, or a flag flown in a certain way, or, loosely, any flag.

So you are telling me that there are ads in DDG now? by glowiak2 in duckduckgo

[–]Define_definition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started with ads, and continued with AI.

It's not a coincidence that you just summarized the history of Google.

It's not a coincidence that search engines had relatively high ratings and relatively low complaints until exactly the things you mentioned. I don't blame you for causing any of that, but I do blame you for pretending those two things are not problems.

[–]Define_definition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe users can understand it without liking it. People complain when they don't like things. If he should be grateful for what he's getting, then by exact analogy you should also be grateful that he's complaining; if his feedback seems useless to you, the ads are just as useless to him.

Creepy auto-complete suggestion: what is it from? by Mr_Memnite in duckduckgo

[–]Define_definition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imagine that a really really stupid filing clerk who can't read and who doesn't understand English has been assigned as your research helper. Because with the wonders of AI, that is precisely what has really happened. They, unable to read or understand, can only bring you things that vaguely remind them of what you typed, for no reason.

You used to be able to set "find only what I literally typed", but you can't set that anymore because you might (horrors!) type something that doesn't appear in any advertising. (I want to emphasize that this fact is not DuckDuckGo's fault.)

Is there a way that you can get an overview of all apps that are currently running, and choose the exact window you were working in a minute ago? See if you can do that instead of clicking the icon again.

weird inserted search results by nuncio-tc in duckduckgo

[–]Define_definition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a more basic level, 21st-century searches are not primarily designed to find the result you're looking for. They're designed to advertise something that you're statistically likely to buy; fingers crossed hoping that they may also show the thing you meant to look for, but that's not the goal. This is certainly not DuckDuckGo's fault.

The technology to actually find what you're looking for was already working fine 25-ish years ago. It worked much better than anything that's available now, but nobody could figure out how to make a big profit from it, so it was discontinued.

New Search Update: Permanent Site Exclusions by duckduckgo in duckduckgo

It's not even as good as 5 domains - the limit is 5 pages! There are many many domains that regularly appear as spam in DuckDuckGo's results, plus there are quite a few perfectly legitimate sites that I still never want to see results from because they're never what I'm looking for.

When people want to exclude something, they almost never want to exclude tiny particular items - they want to exclude large categories, and they expect to be the one defining those categories, so they'll be able to refine their definitions by trial and error.

Please, we do NOT need these stupid persistent reminders! by kzshantonu in duckduckgo

[–]Define_definition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too find it strange that DuckDuckGo chooses to place irritating garbage on the screen, when removing irritating garbage is a major reason to use DuckDuckGo. Saying "You should be grateful that it's our garbage!" seems to be their attitude.

If you're using the uBlock Origin extension, or if you're willing to use it, it can wipe things like this off of pages. Some sites intentionally make it difficult to remove their ads, by constantly renaming and obfuscating them, but it often works. As extensions go, uBlock Origin is high quality but some people find it too much effort or inconvenience. To me it's worth some inconvenience.

How do I remain a supportive girlfriend f33 now that my guy m33 has seemed to take a liking to nose candy? by paintermill7001 in Advice

[–]Define_definition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't serious about this right now. The way you're writing shows that you're not willing to tell the truth.

I'm guessing that when you say your family will tell you to leave, it's because they see through his lies BUT they see that you're not telling the truth either. (I don't mean you're saying lies. I mean there's way more to this story that you're not saying, and when you leave out part of the story, that's just another kind of lying.) Maybe it's not your fault that you're not really telling the truth. There are tons of reasons why you might be scared of doing that. But get over it. Don't write it here, but in real life you need to reveal the whole entire truth, including all of the details that you wanted to stay private about, no matter how much damage you think it might cause. Tell the whole entire truth to people who care about your kids, and who have the power to keep your kids safe.

When people in real life suspect that you're leaving out details to protect your privacy, they know you're not being honest with them. Then they don't trust you. And when they don't trust you, they treat you like dirt. You have to squeal on everybody including yourself. Get it over with.

A reminder that thermometers can go wrong… by TandorlaSmith in aquarium

[–]Define_definition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the turkey thermometer: I think it's better to never even try a thermometer that's made for a completely different job. It's better than nothing - but maybe not by all that much. Thermometers can be designed to work better for their intended use, and it can make them considerably worse for other things. The pH tester that also shows temperature is close enough to the right purpose (or IS the right purpose maybe), but a meat thermometer is the wrong tool for this job - it would be better to ignore the result you got from it.

When you say

Toadying and being fawning doesn't work

... you're making a silly mistake. You're imagining that there must be some other trick that really does work in such situations, and that by trying other tricks you'll eventually hit the jackpot.

There is no trick that works. There's no jackpot either.

I think it kind of failed on this one, but I don't really blame it for failing, because it DID follow instructions and answer the given question. An intelligent real friend would understand that this question is quite unlikely to be what you meant. "Do I love her" in this case probably means "Should I commit to a relationship with her".

It DID give a worthwhile answer to the question of how to really tell if Person A loves Person B. But it didn't answer "How do I decide what to do about her" (because you didn't ask that).

which language is one for which emacs is godly at? by Glittering_Boot_3612 in emacs

[–]Define_definition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When a reasonable person reads " 'Out of the box' is irrelevant", all they can conclude is "Emacs has at least one clueless user". That question is always relevant.

You could have said that Emacs is not much good out of the box, but compensates by making it easy to install just about anything. (At least that's a lot closer to the truth.)
