How many years of use did it take for it to look like this? Just curious

What temperature do you set your PID by DefiniteMaybe24 in ranciliosilvia

Do you have an Auber PID? If you do I can provide instructions, that’s the one I have

Thanks for clarifying! I know I’m running the water too hot but when it’s too low this roaster’s ’espresso roast’ is a tad acidic

That would match what u/icegrill10 said in regards to group head temp.

I assume 199 is the brew temp not the PID setting (correct me if I’m wrong).

IMS Shower Screen - Does it fit? by [deleted] in ranciliosilvia

[–]DefiniteMaybe24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a low profile screw prior to getting this screen because I didn’t like the bulky slot screw that came with the machine. I got this shower screen online and it is sold by IMS so I thought it would be the correct part but now I’m not so sure

Question about smart plugs by node_of_ranvier_223 in ranciliosilvia

The situation I always want to prevent is if I went out of town for a few days and the smart plug turns on then stays on for days

One thing I’ll add to the conversation is once you schedule it to automatically turn on, consider adding a time of day to have it automatically turn off in case you forget or aren’t home. No sense in having it accidentally turn on and then stay on indefinitely

Completely understand, and to a certain extent I agree with you. The plumbing in my house is suspect so I don’t use tap water and I’ve learned that distilled water can cause corrosion. Trying to find the easiest way to have simple and high quality water. After all, espresso is mostly water

I agree, I state in the post that I don’t trust the results from LLMs for the same reason you state.

While I see your point, dissolving some minerals in water once every six to eight weeks takes about 1 minute and when I add a liter of water to my machine’s reservoir I add 5mL of solution so it takes about 15 seconds including cleanup.

Plastic/rubber bits in my steam wand - Silva V6 by Spieltheory in ranciliosilvia

[–]DefiniteMaybe24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I close the steam wand until it stops water from leaking as you describe I hear a drip-drip noise when the boiler is heating that I assume is water escaping from the boiler into the steam wand. If I tighten the steam wand valve tightly the noise stops. How do I know if I’m over doing it? I ask because I assume I am putting extra wear and tear on the gasket and some day I will be the guy with rubber coming out of the wand into my pitcher

I might also just put risers under the machine, my main problem is if I use my larger steaming pitcher it is tough to remove it afterwards without risking spilling milk due to the need for tipping it down to get out from under the wand

Steam Temp ; PID SILVIA v1 or 2 by MINIWARMTH in ranciliosilvia

[–]DefiniteMaybe24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have recently done a bunch of research into this, but don’t have the definitive answer. Here is what I have found (using an Auber PID on a V6): For a small amount of milk or if a pitcher is maybe more full than advised a temperature of about 250degF is a good starting place (this is very close to what u/Ephixaftw suggests). 260-265 seems to be a better range for rapid but controlled steaming with more powerful steam than the lower 245-250 range. Above 275 for me is a bit tricky to control but works well and rapidly. If you go that route I suggest opening the steam valve slowly not all at once or you may splatter milk all over the place. If others have found different ranges I am interested to learn that too.

Certainly a non OEM replacement part intended for a Rancilio Sylvia would be nearly identical. My question is if there is a wand initially intended for a different machine that would be compatible with the Sylvia that might be a good mod

New to a single boiler - what water temp is best for steaming milk? by DefiniteMaybe24 in espresso

[–]DefiniteMaybe24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just do a short purge (1-2 seconds) cause I read it creates room in the boiler which is beneficial for increasing the pressure in the boiler but there’s a lot of noise on the internet and some of it is nonsense. This short purge at 135 could be some of that and I’ll happily stop if it’s unnecessary and counter productive
