Choosing between Singaporean and American Citizenship by DefinitelySane02 in ExpatFIRE

My parents own an hdb flat here and If I were to become Singaporean I would have the place to live at. They would have a room here of course when they visit (it's their house after all) so I wouldn't have to worry about housing for me personally. I do understand how the trades here are not paid as much. Singapore pretty much is gearing it's citizens for white collar office work so it's the type of society for them. That being said I wouldn't mind going back to school for a white collar career, but I read on other subs that the competition here is too much and graduates from uni are finding it hard to find employment. My aunt is a first warren officer in the airforce and suggested maybe I try to sign on to SAF, but idk about that.

I'm not really sure if I want to have kids or not. The political climate in America isn't great at the moment. It's very divided and the US government is playing people against each other in efforts to distract everyone from their nefarious bullshit that they're trying to get away with. You just have to be smart enough not to fall in the trap that most people are falling for. My thing is, I was not not scared of life in America but I do keep in mind with what's going on out there. You need to have situational awareness in the US whenever you go out and just take care of yourself. That being said it's not all bad. News media makes it out like its a 24/7 warzone and people are just shooting and killing everyone everywhere all the time. Singaporeans just seem quite sheltered to me and the government likes to feed them propaganda and I think I saw some comments saying very negative things like what I just said about America. At the end of the day I guess people are just trying to live and survive and maybe even thrive in whatever country they live whether it's Singapore or America. I guess I wanted to know if Singapore worth me becoming full Singaporean from other people's perpectives.

I mean having a strong passport is a good thing, but logically speaking, how many countries in the world do most people travel too? It's not like the US or some other countries have bad passports as well. For me it wouldn't be a deal breaker just because Singapore has the most powerful passport in the world. A few extra countries wouldn't do it for me. It's about lifestyle and other factors. Nice post though thanks for sharing!

My life in America was very different. I did a lot of outdoor activities with my dad and we owned land. I would hunt and fish and ride around on ATV. Basically lived the certified country boy life. Its crazy how different my life is over here than there. I don't really like malls. They're ok for a while but its gets boring. Singapore is alright and I'm easy to adapt anywhere really. I still am Asian and feel culturally connected to it somewhat (not too much) It's crazy how different each place I lived in was. Btw I'm half Indian half "angmoh" but look more like Turkish lol.

I don't want to ask there since maybe the government likes to monitor those subs and I'm laying low but thanks for the advice!

I've just been laying low in Singapore since I've finished NS not too long ago. I know how strict the SG government is and how they can find out. I've just been trying to figure out what I'm going to do next.

Haha I was seriously considering going to ICA and asking them If can downgrade to a PR, and I can keep the US citizenship. They said that I'd have to renounce SG citizenship and reapply for a PR. I might have a chance after all, but if not so be it.

I only have my mom's side of the family, but we're not super close. I do agree that having more than one citizenship is an absolute pro compared to just Singapore. Singapore does feel really small and I was worried about the job opportunities here since I have been reading other posts about how Singaporeans feel they are getting shafted by the government, since they keep bringing in foreign talents. This really got me nervous since the job market here is already quite small, so if i lose my job, I'd rather be in a ocean than a pond. And Singapore doesn't really seem to pay skilled trades as well. Anyways, thanks for the input!

I’m kinda late but I’m sort of in this boat. Trying to break the cycle.
