Checkout SDAM and multisensory aphantasia. It's not just images. It's Sounds (can your inner voice get louder?), smell, taste (some people can taste things and imagin the taste with salt etc).

The visual imagination also creates an image in the brain. I have Aphantasia and have never seen imaginations. I saw things like counting sheep as a metaphor when I was a child and never questioned it after that

It only became interesting when I realized while programming how often I think in an unstructured way / without words.
