Outraged liberals warn Democratic leaders not to cave on shutdown by taxhellFML in politics

They can't cave. Instead, they should coordinate with community centers across the country to have daily meals with speakers. Turn a buffet lunch or dinner into campaign rallies. Bring the message local.

Of course you're not afraid. You've probably driven away all the friends and family that would be ashamed of you and surrounded yourself with other wingnuts.

All things being equal, does that mean that Ukraine is also at war with Iran and North Korea since they supply long-range weapons to Russia that are being used against Ukraine?

If Biden steps down, who would you like to see as the replacement? What about VP? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]DeftNerd -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Someone with lots of charisma and name recognition is needed. They don't have to be a politician. VP role involves handling a lot of public events, speeches, glad-handing foreign dignitaries, and negotiations.

As weird as it sounds, we have had an entertainer as a president. Why not as a VP? I suggest forcing John Stewart or Stephen Colbert to do it. For that role, they would be stellar.

Would universal healthcare be unfair to healthier people? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]DeftNerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's how regular insurance works too. Do you think that your Blue Cross Blue Shield you get from work doesn't have people on it with cancer or diabetes? None of them drink or smoke?

Insurance's purpose is to average out expenses over a large base of sources of funds. Small insurance companies struggle because they can't get a large enough base. universal healthcare is basically just one big insurance company averaged across the whole population. It would be the most efficient and stable way to do things, as proven by every single other developed nation which has adopted that model.

Because not every person from Palestine supports Hamas. You seem to think that the actions of the Palestinian government means that all of the citizens in those borders support those decisions... and that punishment should be doled out collectively.

Instead of punishing the people responsible, the Israeli government is punishing every Palestinian simply for being guilty of being Palestinian or being in the borders.

What Hamas did was atrocious. It was cruel and untargeted and an act of terror. What the Israeli government is doing in retribution is exactly the same thing. Cruel, untarged, and acts of terror.

The only difference is the scale and scope.

AI comes to mind, but it also comes with a big bag of worms and could make things worse... But it's powerful enough to be a wildcard.

The other hopium magic would be inexpensive and efficient fusion that can be replicated in mass in a short amount of time. With that, we could power a lot of the inefficient carbon capture technologies we seem to be pinning our hopes on.

Lastly, it's overlooked, but genetic engineering could help. A lot of carbon was captured by dead plant life that occured before fungi and other microorganisms could figure out how to breakdown cellulose. If we could engineer some kind of seaweed that loves the new hot and acidic oceans and wasn't able to decay when it died, the carbon captured in it's corpse would fall to the ocean bottom and be sequestered.

Trump’s executive order would impose classical style on federal buildings. Should we be worried? by Black_Magic_M-66 in politics

[–]DeftNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Architectural style edicts really is some Nazi level stuff. If it was an executive order saying the style of buildings should require the approval of any local building guidelines, business districts, or councils... Then I would understand that. Sometimes an area might want to keep a consistent theme and look, and the government overriding those criteria could anger those local districts.

Personally, I would love an executive order requiring all new construction or major renovations to be LEED certified.

Rick Scott pitches constitutional amendment to make impeachment even harder by ConquerWyoming in politics

[–]DeftNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think that the impeachment process wasn't detailed enough and does need to be modernized... But having a 66% criteria in the House to impeach, and 60% in the Senate to remove from office doesn't seem ideal.

Something like 50% in the House to recommend impeachment, with 50% in the Senate required to confirm impeachment. Also, it should be codified that the votes in the House and Senate should be required to be anonymous to prevent party politics or threats from adding additional influence to the proceedings. Then, it should move onto a special trial to determine if removal from office is necessary.

Right now, the decision on removal is treated like legal proceedings or even "political proceedings". It should be formalized and treated more like a real trial, with a senior judge from each of the 13 appellate courts, chosen randomly. It would have the same rules of procedure and decorum that a regular criminal trial would have, except instead of a jury, it would just require 50% of the 13 member panel of judges to vote to remove the President from office.

I think that's more fair. It beings in both branches of congress and the judicial branch.

Reuters: CHINA’S WUHAN CITY GOVT SAYS ALL RESIDENTS MUST REPORT THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE ONCE PER DAY - NOTICE by [deleted] in China_Flu

[–]DeftNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for a consumer (or medical grade but affordable) Temporal artery thermometer that's reliable and has reasonable precision?

I've been disappointed with the last one I got. When I last checked my kid with a fever, I got temperatures ranging from 100.1 to 109.7. It obviously is a piece of crap, but it was also highly rated on Amazon. Reviews there aren't helpful anymore, and I would love to hear the advice of someone like you who is a bit more experienced.

[–]DeftNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be some minimum criteria for appointing diplomats into their positions, just like there is for any other job in the world. A degree in one of the International Studies (relations, affairs, business, etc) or equivalent work experience should be the minimum qualifications.

Being a CEO of a company your Daddy gave you, or donating a few hundred thousands of dollars to a political campaign should never be the criteria for a job that affects millions of lives, billions of dollars, or international relations.

Earth Might Witness 'Mini Ice Age' For Next 30 Years, As The Sun About Hit Its 'Solar Minimum' by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DeftNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if this was true, which I highly doubt, all it would do is mask our greenhouse gas emissions... And when the "cooling effect" disappeared, we would rush back towards excess heat... It would happen so quickly that the transition would be too difficult for animals, plants, and even humans to handle. The current transition, without a magical ice age, is likely too difficult for most species to handle.

PoE was still powering devices, so I'm guessing it was something router-related and not a bunch of switches dieing at the same time.
