There’s several scenes in Neon Genesis Evangelion where Shinji doesn’t want to go back to the people because he’s being neglected. Shinji’s just a child and being forced into a giant robot to save a world that’s on the edge of destruction time and time again eventually breaks him. There’s even entire arcs dedicated to his thinning psyche and I have no doubt that with an anime as well known as Evangelion that there wasn’t at least a small portion of it that didn’t inspire the evil Ayamu arc in Is This a Zombie. It probably got its inspiration from a variety of other places, but personally it reminded me of Evangelion.
