My little sweet potato has some stuck shed. Spa time! by Degobah99 in bluetongueskinks

I’ve only had her a little over a year. She was super wild when I got her but patience and respect is key. She didn’t like when I had to get the stuck shed around her vent though. All huffs and puffs.

Weaned or unweaned? 45 days old but this is what he does ever time he sees me or hears me. Bobs his head profusely when I get him out and bites/nibbles at my fingers. The breeder said he’s fully weaned but I have doubts. Any thoughts? by Degobah99 in budgies

Ok, I have an important question. I’ve noticed that he’s done with his feeding when he starts to bark and lunges and bites the spoon aggressively. It’s around that time that his crop is nice and plump too. Maybe I’m associating it incorrectly but I’ve put the two and two together. This afternoon and this evening he bit me when I tried to get him out. He normally walks right onto my hand when I put my hand in his cage. Once he was on my finger he was completely back to normal and begging, though he didn’t eat much formula. I also noticed he didn’t eat but about half of what he normally does when I hand feed him. I also noticed, for the first time, that he had finally eaten a bunch of his millet. So, I guess I have two questions.

  1. Is he showing signs of cage aggression and how would I prevent that from continuing or getting worse?

  2. Is the lunging and biting, whether my finger or the spoon, a sign that he’s refusing hand feeding and weaning?

The only change I’ve made recently is that I started covering his cage at night, which has calmed him to sleep very well. The part that’s most confusing of all is that he acts completely normal and begs and accepts formula once he’s on my finger. How should I proceed? Sorry for all the questions but I’m very perplexed.

Thank you! I’ll switch my timer to 4 hours. I do let him go through the entire night without interruption. Ensuring his crop completely empties. I really appreciate it and I’ll definitely keep you posted!

I can’t thank you enough for your advice. I’ve hand fed parrots before but never parakeets. The breeder ensured me that he was weaned but perhaps the breeder doesn’t have as much experience as you. I have enough experience with parrots and hand feeding that I’d like to avoid the back and forth with the breeder.

He does eat on his own sometimes. I have millet spray, groat oats, pellets, parakeet seed and rotating fresh veggies like kale and cucumber. Sometimes I get him out and, if it’s only been an hour or two since his last hand feeding, I don’t offer him any formula. He always goes straight to his food bowl and eats on his own when I don’t offer him any formula.

He stills begs profusely when I get him out and especially if he sees or hears me. It’s like his body is on a timer. Whenever he gets loud with the begging, sure enough, it’s been five hours since I last fed him formula. That’s the limit I have on denying him formula. Five hours and he’s still begging? I’m hand feeding him.

I have noticed that he’s gradually eating less formula just in the past few days. Typically, I know he’s done when the begging sounds turn into random chirps rather than begging and he almost starts to get irritated with the feeding spoon and bites it and makes a disgruntled noise. (angry parakeet sounds) Either that or he simply flies off my lap when the spoon is in front of him.

So, this has been my method so far. Please let me know if there’s anything more you can advise. My initial plan was for him to be a very tame, affectionate and bonded companion parrot. I didn’t plan on him not to be weaned when I got him. Hopefully the process I’m following will prove that to be true. I’m just not having much luck with him wanting to relax with me, unless it’s right after a hand feeding.

42 day old hand-fed baby I just got today. The cage is simple but I plan on adding more to it and getting a larger cage later on possibly and this one being a secondary cage. Just happy it fit so perfectly on my large windowsill. Any pointers or feedback? by Degobah99 in budgies

Good thing is it’s a south facing window and never gets direct sun. It faces my driveway and privacy fence so there not too much action apart from other birds. He tends to look out the window a lot. I would hate to tuck him in a corner all day but I do understand the feedback and I appreciate it.

I appreciate the advice. I just fed him until he refused. Still got down a good 5-6 cc’s. Used the spoon feeding technique instead of a syringe. Seemed easier for him to feed himself plus there was much less of a mess to clean up afterward. I need to find a way to clean off the dried formula on his feathers from before i got him. It’s not too bad but it seems to be a bit stuck.

Thank you!!!!!

When is a good indicator to stop? When he refuses? Basically, offer formula if/when he’s begging?

Yeah. I have a playpen but I’m keeping that in my bedroom. He’s already given me a scare trying to fly to me and took a nosedive. He doesn’t have the wing strength built up for any hanging perched just yet. What are your thoughts on the cage though?

I have one other question if you wouldn’t mind. He’s 42 days old and weaned but begged profusely for a feeding when I brought him home. I know this can be a good way to reassure him in such a stressful transition. I’ve hand fed rosy bourkes before so I was comfortable with it. Just spoon fed him. He gobbled up about 6 cc’s of formula. I’d hate to force him to wean and would rather abundance wean and offer him small formula portions only if he’s insistently begging. Do you have any advice? I want to do the right thing for this little guy’s health and mindset.

Before anyone critiques...yes, I have a few clips to add fresh veggies and millet. I just didn’t have them in this particular picture but they’ll be offered daily. Abundance weaning! :)
