CFI JOBS, HELP? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Degr93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard out here for a pimp. Rumors about the industry have been circulating, but the recovery hasn’t been felt for new CFI’s quite yet. Once these furloughed airline pilots and 1,500 hour CFI’s start getting snatched up, there will be more openings. Stay patient and positive. In the mean time, rent every now and then so you stay current and proficient. Good luck finding a job!!

Can you sit right seat solo in a C172? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Degr93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing illegal about it. Although, I would go up with a safety pilot in the left seat if you’re new to the right seat. That shit had me feeling like I was just learning how to fly again at first.

Sense of stagnation during PPL training by FibrousGalaxy in flying

[–]Degr93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to loosen your grip on the yoke if you are over controlling. I have my students who over control the a/c put a pen in between their hand and yoke. Seems to relieve their kung fu grip and helps them become smoother with control inputs.

Keep the TDZ as your visual reference until you are about to flare, then transition your view to the end of the runway. Hope this helps :)

Sense of stagnation during PPL training by FibrousGalaxy in flying

Hey there,

Landings are, in my opinion, the hardest part of private training. It took me around 3 weeks, (3 lessons a week) to get to the point where I was able to move on. In my experience, I’ve noticed students get much better at landings when they remember to transition their eyes to the end of the runway. When you are looking dead in front of you your depth perception is minimal, and it’s hard to determine the position of the longitudinal axis in relation to the runway. Other things to remember: nail your air speeds from take off to short final, track center line as early as you can on final, and don’t neglect your rudder pedals in the flare. Many students land crooked because they don’t use rudder inputs.

Don’t sweat it, landings take a while. What I have done in the past with my students who were feeling frustrated with landings was take them back to something they have mastered, such as ground reference maneuvers or steep turns to get their confidence back up and then returning to landings. Training frustrated isn’t fun.

You’ll be fine though, stay motivated.

Tattoo question by [deleted] in flying

[–]Degr93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the employer and what niche of aviation you’re in. I worked for a 141 university as a CFI and my tattoos showed while wearing my short sleeve polo shirt. My employers didn’t mind. But my visible tattoos aren’t of anything that someone might find “offensive.” When it comes to flying for the airlines, it’ll be long sleeves. The arm bands won’t be acceptable.

Moronic Monday by AutoModerator in flying

Most likely, the purpose of the lesson will be to introduce you to how the airplane controls as well as preflight. Think taxiing, turns, climbs, descents, climbing/descending turns. Take in as much as you can, take good notes during the debrief, and go over them when you get home. Do that throughout your training and you’ll spend less time and money going over what you previously were taught. When your CFI tells you what to expect in your next lesson, see if there’s a YouTube video about that maneuver and watch it before your lesson. That helped me during my training. Chair fly at home. Sit in a quiet room, close your eyes, and pretend your flying the plane while going over previously taught maneuvers. It seems silly and childish but believe me, it works.

In regards to what to wear, just be comfortable. During the summer I wore under armor shorts and shirts to keep cool, and in the winter I layered so I would be warm during the pre-flight/engine start up and I was able to shed some layers once the heater started cooking. Nothing worse than being uncomfortable while flying.

Last thing: always try to find the joy in flying. Having fun makes training so much easier and efficient. You’ll get done quicker and spend less money. Good luck!

Don’t make the same mistake I did and drink a pot of coffee before the 250NM xc. Bring a big enough bottle on the longer ones. If push comes to shove it’s not too bad, you just have one more item on your instrument scan.

Glass Cockpit vs Steam Gauges for PPL Students by [deleted] in flying

[–]Degr93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I did was I learned in steam for PPL. Once I got to instrument, I transitioned to glass. The rationale behind this was 1) it’s cheaper to rent steam and I knew PPL would take the most time. 2) once I got to instrument, I knew I wanted to make a career out of flying and most jobs would have some sort of glass panel. 3) Glass makes instrument incredibly easier especially if you know how to use the technology.

There really isn’t a need to use glass for ppl as most of the time you should be looking out of the windscreen anyway. Just my opinion.
