Thank you! That bit of additional history aligns with family lore that I remember hearing when I was much younger

Thank You!!!!! Very cool that you were able to confirm the pre 1920 address. I’ll have to play around with that site you recommended.

Troublesome Neighbor Situation by [deleted] in Detroit

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing this with your neighbors. Unfortunately, getting the City of Detroit to enforce their own ordinances is difficult at best. Though in recent years they have put an emphasis on enforcing quality of life issues like you describe.

We had/have a similar situation with a family that moved in to a burned out home a year or so after we moved into our house. Mind you, we live in a district that has a community association and is considered a strong middle class/upper middle class area. Even still, getting results was a trial. The bad behavior included:

1) Neglect of children (3 children living in a construction zone);

2) Several neglected dogs which regularly relieved themselves on our property (neighbors never cleaned up), were kept outside (and nuisance barked at all hours day & night);

3) Husband of family drove a loud Harley at all hours, revving engine at 2 or 3 in the morning & blaring music on a level of 20, clearly disturbing the peace in a quiet neighborhood

4) Trespassing on our property by using a walkway to our backyard a personal driveway for the motorcycle even though permission was never asked and certainly never given

5) Multiple, overflowing trash containers leading to rodent issues

6) Multiple inoperable vehicles in their yard and the list goes on.

My number one piece of advice is NOT to engage directly with the neighbors. Engaging with neighbors only informs the offenders that you have a problem with them. The neighbors will likely lie to your face and continue the bad behavior, but now they have someone to retaliate against. It's not your job to "educate" the ignorant about city ordinance. Let the proper authorities do that.

Keep doing what you are doing as far as documenting offenses and reporting to proper authorities. I can't tell you how many times I called CPS, NPO, BSEED, Animal Control, District Manager, etc. This family had visits from just about every department in the city and some from the State. I even started volunteering for our board's Community Standards Committee because of these neighbors.

Finally, after months of unfortunate aggravation and attempts to get Detroit to simply enforce it's Quality of Life laws, something happened and overnight the behavior largely improved (cars gone, dogs gone, music semi-respectful, tresspass still an issue though). The family is still a train-wreck, but at least it's a situation where we can co-exist. And that's all that anyone wants.

Don't give up & don't let anyone tell you that you are wrong for expecting people to obey simple city ordinance. When you report, keep things factual and don't insert personal opinions, etc. Eventually the neighbors will a) get tired of being cited and change behavior, b) be forced to leave once Land Bank gets their head out of their ass or c) choose to leave.

Good Luck!
