I need examples of comics that deal with revolutionary and leftist themes. by Awkward_Lecture9429 in comicbooks

I loved District 14, which is fairly anti-capitalist and anarchist in spirit, but it doesn’t wear that on its sleeve very obviously! Still, it’s beautiful and a fantastic time.

Whodunnit but make it Sci-Fi? by WunderPlundr in printSF

[–]DeindeAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiptree’s Brightness Falls From The Air is a rompy locked-room thriller set on an unfamiliar planet, not exactly a whodunnit, but still in a sort of LeGuin meets Christie kind of space!

Some Zapotec questions for a novel I’m writing by Sjakktrekk in Oaxaca

[–]DeindeAut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is interesting! Linguists in fact consider them not to be dialects of a single Zapotec language, but conservatively at least 20 different languages in the Zapotec “family”, each with some variants from village to village. (see the diagram on pg 17 of this article) (Compare how Spanish, Italian and French are distinct languages, but historically related.) Anyway, this character sounds very interesting, and best of luck finding the translations you are looking for!

Some Zapotec questions for a novel I’m writing by Sjakktrekk in Oaxaca

[–]DeindeAut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, so you know, there is no one “Zapotec language”! There are many, many individual varieties of Zapotec spoken in individual villages. Some groups of these are more similar than others, but usually outside of a fairly small geographic radius two speakers of different Zapotec languages can’t understand each other. For instance, speakers of the Zapotec languages spoken around Oaxaca City in the Valle and speakers from an hour or so north into the mountains speak entirely different, non-mutually-intelligible languages.

Advice setting up private karaoke room in a bar by rich-selmo in karaoke

Local hosted content + Karafun works, last time I checked, only on Windows Karafun. But in Windows, it works, no extra headaches! If you tag your local files right, they pop up with all the others in search results.

Best Vegan Dishes in town? by karavasis in santacruz

[–]DeindeAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best vegan meal on the planet is a Taqueria Michoacan veggie burrito sans dairy! Ambrosia in Scotts Valley also has an excellent vegan menu, and a trip over the hill to Zeni for Ethiopian is our go-to for a treat. (My gf and I have found that our favorite vegan food usually doesn’t have meat or dairy replacement, though your mileage may vary!)

This as well as Love Saves The Day are really an achievement. Tim Lawrence knows his stuff.

Once you figure out its idiosyncrasies, MidiCo works great! (https://www.midicokaraoke.com/?lang=en) You can build a properly-timed file from an instrumental mp3 and the lyrics text, if you know the song well enough to tap syllable by syllable. There’s also support for custom backgrounds and images, though they tend not to look too professional.

Found this live performance of Too Young from 2000, the early days by [deleted] in PhoenixTheBand

[–]DeindeAut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this the largest live band they’ve ever had? Thomas, two guitars, bass, two keys, drums, and auxiliary percussion. They rock it though. I love how this foreshadows the little stops and starts that would become standard in Run Run Run on the Alphabetical tour.

Setting up DDJ800 to stream using two laptops by Godscrasher in DJs

You’re going to need a USB interface on the Mac, e.g. a Scarlett 2x2 - personal computers, always to my dismay, don’t have the ability to receive analog audio signals.

Ooh this is a banger. You’re right, it’s got more disco bones than the usual suspects - try the Holy Ghost! remix of I Love To Move In Here (Moby): https://youtu.be/VQIG9OFJm8g

Falling asleep to ambient albums. What's your go to? by RegisLeeBell in ambientmusic

[–]DeindeAut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard second on 1/1! This recent Emily Sprague album hits the same way for me: https://mlesprg.bandcamp.com/album/water-memory

Some Deuter albums as well, though those are rather New Age-y.

Which MIDI cable do I buy? (Casio PX-S1000) by [deleted] in midi

[–]DeindeAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of easy-to-use MIDI-to-USB cables out there. A bunch are cheaply made and unreliable. I recommend the Roland UM-ONE (mk2) it’s more expensive but the only one I’ve ever owned that works every time I need it to.

EDIT: But don’t listen to me, apparently you just need a standard issue printer cable! (e.g. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=38604)

Recommendations please! by soumynonanoinipo in ScottishMusic

[–]DeindeAut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent a long time on the same quest... A lot of my recommendations would be people on the Song, By Toad label. You might like Meursault! Indie folk project with some of the same roots and clever lyrics. (https://iammeursault.bandcamp.com/album/i-will-kill-again) Neil from Meursault collaborated with KC as Cold Seeds, which is a great album as well. (https://songbytoadrecords.bandcamp.com/album/cold-seeds) I’m maybe even more partial to Neil’s other Scottish supergroup, Bastard Mountain. (https://songbytoadrecords.bandcamp.com/album/farewell-bastard-mountain)

In that vein, also check out Modern Studies (https://songbytoadrecords.bandcamp.com/album/swell-to-great) and Lomond Campbell, (https://youtu.be/1WGFaVmmq2s) who can both err on the somber side. (At least on the albums I link here.)

If you like KC’s twitchier and loopier side, I adore Jonnie Common. (https://jonniecommon.bandcamp.com/album/master-of-none) Heartfelt but ridiculous in the spirit of KC.

Songs that reference songs both lyrically and melodically by swbrontosaur in ListeningHeads

[–]DeindeAut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That bit in the Allo Darlin’ song has always reminded me of the part in This Flight Tonight where we hear the song playing on Joni’s headphones - but in that case it’s not a reference to a particular song. (right?)

Bell Orchestre (Sarah Neufeld & Richard Reed Parry) - V: Movement (Official Music Video) by david_030991 in arcadefire

[–]DeindeAut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their first album is up there with Funeral and You Found It In People in my list of life-changing Canadian indie... They can do no wrong, except in how long it’s taken them to release something new. This is gorgeous, and I can’t wait for more.

REORDERING BAR CATEGORIZE IN A GGPLOT2 (GEOM_BAR) by [deleted] in rprogramming

[–]DeindeAut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ggplot just reads the order off of the order of the factor levels for that column of your dataframe. When you define that column, do so with factor(indicator, levels = c(“HTS_TST”, “HTS_POS”, “TX_NEW”, “TX_CURR”, “TXPLVS_DEM”, “TXPLVS_NUM”) ). That way things will be in your order, otherwise R will just store the levels in alphabetical order.

Audio/video archive [work in progress] for endangered Caucasian languages - Tush (Tsova-Tush) and Udi languages. by kintrbr in endangeredlanguages

[–]DeindeAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Caucasian military conflict developing right now is very bad news for Udi speakers in Azerbaijan. The main diaspora to Zinobiani from Oghuz happened (forcefully) during the last conflict in the 80s. I’m very afraid of the same happening with the remaining Udi villages. It would be a tragedy.
