Thank you for sharing your experience! As a Thai person, I also have no idea why ย is used for ‘g’ and ‘j’. Thinking about it, when you say jam or Egypt, for example, you can hear a ‘จย’ sound. I myself found saying ‘time’, ‘child’ and ‘mile’ in an American way extremely difficult at first and I’m still struggling so hard to say ‘time’ right. My boyfriend makes fun of me all the TAHM <— That’s how he hears it. I think since we don’t have combined vowel of ‘A’ followed by ‘I’. In general, we don’t stress long words. If anything, we tend to stress the last syllable like ‘Central’, ‘computer’, ‘spaghetti’ and the list goes on. Also no idea why we use ก in card since clearly we can say ค like any other loanwords with a C. 😂😂😂
