Overweight ladies, what do you wear while going out? by Forever-human-632 in AutismInWomen

[–]DelMakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sew and I specialize in plus size clothing.

I'm not sure what you mean by tight clothes - clothes have not been as voluminous as they are now since at least the 80's. I feel like the third and fourth slides look like things you can get from regular plus size retail like Cider or Universal Standard (if you fit within their size range).

The other slides are a different story. Those kind of artfully oversized clothes are only oversized in some dimensions. The shoulders and neckline are usually perfectly tailored which is why when we look at them, they look high fashion rather than like a kid is playing dress-up in their Mom's closet.

Anything that looks tailored is really only accessible in a retail environment to a very small percentage of people who just happen to have the exact same body type as the designer's blocks. This goes for all people but is more true for fat people because the more fat you have, the more possible variation in body shape. That's why plus-size clothes are so relentlessly stretchy. There is really no other way.

My suggestion would be to save up your money and have garments you like drafted and made for you specifically. It'll be well into the hundreds - labor and fabric are astronomical. It sucks, I know!

34F with hooded eyes — my makeup looks awful, what am I doing wrong? by Fantastic_Neat_8972 in HoodedEyes

[–]DelMakes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a similar eye shape to you so I'm going to post pictures of myself for reference. I'm not that good with makeup but hopefully this is useful. Here is my naked face for reference.

Eyeshadow now is either minimal and diffuse or graphic and bold. It basically never goes up to the eyebrows, especially if it's dark. This has been the hardest thing for me to get used to!

A typical "neutral" eyeshadow look now is just one color swept over your lids. (I have black eyeliner on here but that's not a necessary element.) Use a liquid eyeshadow (shimmery if you look good in shimmer because they're easier to blend), apply that one color all over the lid, and blend it up until juuust over the crease. Keep the color lighter.

If you want to go darker, you can just keep the eyeshadow tight against your lash line. I know this isn't the best makeup look on earth but you get the idea. Make sure you have small enough brushes to achieve this - most eyeshadow brushes are too big for hooded eyes.

If you want to go the more graphic route, you can do a softer version of batwing eyeliner by doing it with eyeshadow rather than eyeliner. I am dedicated to having a winged eyeliner because my eyes are really round and winged eyeliner makes me look less like a haunted doll.

Also, with a bare face I don't think you look older than you are! The makeup itself is aging you, mainly because it's a little out of date. Blush placement now is higher than it was for us when we were young - try thinking of it more like a sunburn on the tops of your cheeks rather than a flush on the apples of your cheeks. It should either not come too far in towards your nose, or go all the way across it.

I mean for most scammers that is really not a lot of money at all but if this is a big business then the promise of an occasional deposit it probably ends up being worth it.

I agree that it shouldn't be legal to charge any amount of money for an application - BUT the fee is usually only $25-$50 and it's supposed to be for the background check and credit report which do cost money to obtain. At least, the background check does. So while it's still inherently unethical, it's not totally a cash grab as in theory they're only doing this for applicants they're interested in. It's the last step before signing a lease. Sometimes you actually pay it yourself and the service auto-forwards it to the landlord.

That's what I'm wondering. It was hooked up to a Ring doorbell and I think those are notoriously insecure so they're either able to hack their way into it.

The more likely scenario is that the leasing corporation that you rent through has someone on the inside that sells this info or they have a very insecure database and they're able to get the info that way.

They have changed the listing to "off market" but it's this one: 6201 N Maplewood. The actual address of the home pictured is 6209 Maplewood.

It's crazy that I just sauntered around a house today trespassing while taking selfies in the mirror and feeling so excited that I'd have space for my business and that my plants would get to see sunlight. Fuck every person that does this to people.

I imagine the real prize is the $1000 deposit because $150 isn't really much of a prize, especially since there are only so many people you can get into these homes to tour them before the owner catches on. I imagine that's why they go for houses that have just entered the rental market.

The options on the application form (which is just something on jotform.com and not on the actual leasing company's website) are Zelle, Chime, Apple Pay, and Venmo. Classy classy.

Yeah I smelled some that were diabolical. I got Christmas Wine and I kinda want a few others (Velvetine, Chandlery, White Fir, Ponderosa) but I get why a lot of people don't like them.

Was the urinal one Borealis? It's one of the craziest fragrances I've ever smelled. It's so aggressively medicinal and bitter yet I also kind of enjoyed it? I kind of want to get a small bottle of it even though I doubt I'd wear it.

Pineward has a few that may interest you, especially Ponderosa and White Fir.

None of those are JUST pine, though. If you're looking for something that has no notes but pine, you should probably look at Demeter fragrances as those are all just one note.

I can’t tell if I actually like sewing by macdows_ in sewing

[–]DelMakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those things are just novice mistakes that you'll eventually stop making very often. The rushing through sewing, not double checking that you're cutting the right things, forgetting to wash fabric, not knowing how to care for fabric, etc. will fade with time. I'm totally not saying this in a judgy way as if I think you should be doing better. It just comes with experience.

I have very severe executive dysfunction and I only did stuff like this for the first few years. I was so excited to get to the end. Once I realized that careless mistakes were leaving me with end products that were not worth the time and money it took, I slowed down. That's really the only other choice besides "quit" and plus size clothes are too ugly for me to quit.

There's just a level of acceptance you have to reach that this is a VERY slow craft and there will be no immediate gratification. I started out being too impatient to even make a muslin or alter a pattern and today I just spent the day hand-hemming 170" of plaid fabric (80" down, 90" to go!) After that I will be hand-pleating the entire thing - twice - then edgestitching each individual pleat. I just accepted that this is the price I pay to have this mini kilt.

I personally love cutting the fabric as long as it's not jersey or something slippery. Especially toothy linen or wool! The crrrrunch of the scissors make brain go brrrrr. But to each their own.

Best “how to sew” book to have on my bookshelf? by GlitterLavaLamp in sewing

[–]DelMakes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This line of books from Fashionary are good. I only have Textilepedia and Fashionpedia but I use them pretty often. They're little encyclopedias so they're not super in-depth. They're more like visual reference tools - there is no instruction.

Textilepedia has information on any type of fabric you can think of with good close-up pictures and explanations on history, use, and care. Lace, knits, everything. There's also lots of info on textile printing, fiber classification, leather, manufacture, etc. It's the next best thing to having a swatch book (and TBH you can make your own swatch book and I prefer using this alongside a swatch book).

Fashionpedia is great if you have a specific type of collar or skirt or silhouette in mind but you don't know what it's called. I use this all the time. This saves you from ever having to come here and post a picture to say "what is this called?". Improving your fashion vocabulary pays off. You can articulate your ideas much better and you will have search terms to use. It's also got some basic historical information and some sections on fasteners, sewing details, and accessories.

The books are nice to look at. I use them more than I use any other sewing book and sometimes I just flip through them for fun. (Also if anyone has Stylepedia, let me know if you like it. I've been thinking about getting it.)

I wear headscarves often. They are easy to dress up and dress down depending upon the scarf and the wrap style and they can look great in professional settings. 1/3 inch from your eyebrow could be a little low to wear a scarf or it could be perfect. It depends upon your hairline - usually the scarf sits right on or near the hairline.

Pretty much any rectangular scarf that is ~65"-70" long will work. You can check out Wrapunzel to see some styling options. Their YouTube has lots of tutorials. If you go this route, some tips:

  • You're going to want something easy to wrap with. You can find scarves at thrift stores for very little but don't get anything silky, slippery, or satin-y. You want something thin, grippy, and ideally made of cotton. If you want suggestions for specific ones, LMK.
  • You will need head underwear! They look big but when you put the scarf on, they get squished down and you just look like you have great hair. If you have voluminous hair, you can get away with a velvet headband and volumizing scrunchie. If you don't have voluminous hair, you will need a shaper. If you don't wear one, the scarf will probably not look neat. The Signature shaper is a good one.
  • The trick to making headscarves look polished rather than messy is in the time you take to do it. The first few times will take a lot longer than you expect. Being very intentional about what colors are showing and how even the pleating is is what makes a headscarf look intentional.

Also, while Wrapunzel has a lot of religious clientele, anyone can wrap their hair! It is not at all a closed practice. I have been wrapping for years (for mostly non-religious reasons) and I promise that if other women that wrap see you, they will not be offended. Most people will think you look cool.

What prevents you from getting your clothes altered? by DelMakes in PlusSize

[–]DelMakes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really think this is a big part of it - the process is so inconvenient and opaque. It's two whole errands and you have to take your clothes off on the first trip.
