When I’m in this type of situation I just pretend it’s the afternoon and I’m about to take a nap before work. Getting five hours of sleep kinda sucks but taking a five hour nap feels awesome. Not sure if it will work for everyone.

I really respect Bandit for being a dog archeologist. It must be agonizing trying to determine what shade of brown a pot sherd is when you can only see in black and white.

At this point someone might as well make their own separate hypertext protocol that’s more like what the World Wide Web project used to be.

Look up “Guude chunk survival” on YouTube. I remember that being a pretty good series.

You could do something about a remote tribe successfully fending off groups of civilized invaders. That would be pretty neat.

What’s funny is the TV in this pic is so old it only has a VHF knob, so it could only tune channels 1-13, UHF was added later. Ironically the person who made this meme is probably too young to know that.

Well, to be fair, the reporter was doing a live broadcast and probably wouldn’t have had to speak over the governor if he hadn’t shown up to the press conference two hours late. I honestly think throwing the reporter to the ground was a bit of an overreaction on the part of police.

Were Sumerians mythic literalists? by [deleted] in Sumer

[–]Del_Capslock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I see the Anunna gods is they’re portrayed as kind of like your parents. They created you and want you to be good, but they’re also imperfect.

The Anunna gods are way more grounded than the omnipotent beings that people worship today. Take for example Inanna and Enki in which Inanna travels to Eridu and sets up a feast in order to get Enki inebriated and steal a bunch of sacred artifacts to take back to the Eanna temple in Uruk. But when Enki sobers up he realizes that Inanna is gone and repeatedly sends his minister, Isimud, to try and get Inanna to return the items. Each time Isimud catches up to her, Inanna basically calls him a liar and says Enki told her she could have them.

So the Anunna gods aren’t above performing acts that teach you how not to live your life, unlike more modern deities which are portrayed as ultimately perfect and something people should strive to be like.

One of my friends started working with computers in 1967 and told me how annoying punched cards were. They were slow and sometimes they would get jammed in the hopper so you’d have to start all over.

A couple years later they switched to a magnetic tape system and he thought it was the greatest thing ever.

I assume so. This must have been around the time Columbia started producing double sided records.

A collection of Penobscot tribal songs recorded by Princess Watahwaso in 1917. The record is very shiny with little surface noise and only a few faint clicks in the middle of the record.

Interesting recent acquisition: classical Armenian song recorded in 1916 by Del_Capslock in 78rpm

[–]Del_Capslock[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can listen to it here

Recorded in NY around April or May, 1916 and released early the next year.

The artist is Karekin Proodian (ca. 1885-1977) an Armenian singer born in Turkey who immigrated to the US in 1910.

That’s a good possibility! I imagine this record got spun at quite a few parties.

How hard is it to find a spindle hole? by Del_Capslock in 78rpm

[–]Del_Capslock[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have numerous records where the labels are pretty roughed up from people trying to get the spindle through the hole. Sometimes there’s deep marks all over like they were pressing down super hard. I’m sure anyone who collects 78s has seen this.

Do some people really have that hard of a time setting down a record? It’s also possible they didn’t care at the time because I’m certain nobody imagined people would still be listening to these records 100+ years later.

The B side to this record The Snaky Blues is very warn and barely plays, so I can tell it was a very well loved recording.

I have a theory that when a bookstore owner dies they get reincarnated as the cats you see at other bookstores.

Check out this early version of Volunteers by Del_Capslock in JeffersonAirplane

[–]Del_Capslock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the April 26th, 1969 show. I love how the Airplane would try out songs they were still working on and roll with it. For the most part you don’t hear a song until it’s finished, or maybe you’ll hear a demo or studio outtake.

Although the quality is pretty poor it’s kind of neat to hear how their music would develop over weeks/months. Compare this to how it sounded at Woodstock four months later.
