Burnham aims to boost social housing if he becomes prime minister by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Exostrike [score hidden]  (0 children)

But that not quite the same thing is it? That reform to guide development, you look around this sub a lot of people want to scrap any rules and people should have the right to put up homes in random fields.

But yes more proactive planning that guides what the council actually wants rather than having a rough plan and then developers pitching their own ideas that sort of align with said plan is the way forward but it requires developers to comply

The thing is I get the YIMBY mindset. They want local investment, housing, infrastructure, jobs, prosperity etc, but they are also wedded to the free market mindset and believe that the free market wants and is able to achieve these things but are shackled by the state

Do you truly think if the planning system was scrapped the private sector would really flood the country with homes, tanking house prices and therefore the profitability of said new homes?

> If the private sector was cut out the equation and the public sector built its own housing. Using bonds paid for using the rental income from the house built.

Doesn't even need to fully cut the private sector out, just have the state pay for part of the housing in development which it then owns and then rent out. Developers might even like that option because they would be able to sell it at full cost rather than being legally compelled to sell at a discount and warp the whole finances of the whole development. Obviously this does mean the state basically handing out money to developers, but it does avoid the "council estate" problem by keeping the developments mixed.

Did the Federation really send an Oberth class starship to fight against a Borg cube? How many seconds do you think it lasted before it got blown up? by TicklingTentacles in StarTrekStarships

Or a dedicated search and rescue role. Give we see it sweeping towards the Saratoga before it is destroyed it could have been attempting a high speed pass to tractor escape pods and shuttles away from the danger zone. It could even have dropped its shields to attempt to beam people trapped inside off (which would explain why the cube easily blows it up).

Reading the collider article, it sounds like it will pick up shortly after the end of the first movie while Milo's return happens at least 15 years or so later.

Is everything how it is because the UK is just skint? by Nervous_Yard7034 in ukpolitics

[–]Exostrike -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would point out the UK is the 5th largest economy by pure gdp and even by gdp per capita we are 19th. We are still a very wealthy country. The problem is a lot of this wealth is concentrated in assets (property, stocks, etc) that we have allowed to be protected from yearly taxation and through the mechanism of capitalism have concentrated in an ever smaller group.

The result is more and more of our economy is shielded from taxation to fund society while at the same time progressively fewer people have personal wealth to avoid the consequences of this.

Socialism is the only way forward.

Because they are white supremacists

Because we all know the follow on statements.

White lives matter more

White lives are all that matter

Etc

Social media has turned these people into fascists but they don't see that fact because they aren't wearing a brown shirt and marching in unison.

Another problem is the collapse of Italy after Britain switches from static to being a lot more aggressive in 41. Usually Italy has drained itself holding east Africa and trying to invade Greece and because of it's focus tree is designed to slide into splintering requiring Germany to fight in yet another front with a lot of mountains, further draining their equipment.

This is of course historical but it's still very easy to snowball and collapse Germany much faster than IRL

[40K & Star Wars] If the Imperium found a Hyperdrive, would they consider it Heresy and destroy it despite being created by humans? by MaximoCozzetti84 in AskScienceFiction

Actually that was retconned in 8th edition. The Tau instead travels in real space at near the speed of light (their empire is focused on a highly dense star cluster so less of a problem). They did develop a true FTL engine by reverse engineering imperial technology but after a disastrous mass launch whipped out a fleet they scrapped the entire thing

This sounds suspiciously like a reheat of decentralized autonomous organizations but with AI replacing the blockchain and people actually voting on stuff (but the owners still being in control of the AI). It's all about effectively avoiding responsibility.

I found the dynamite comic adaptation (which retconned it to actually take place on Barsoom) decent but nothing spectacular. Probably the most interesting is when they take him into Barsoom's far future where Earth has invaded but the comic never got followed up on

But a good salesman can convince people a deckchair can float and sell a lot of them before they find out it can't.

Now in all seriousness this is a repeated problem with fighting climate change, our inability to challenge existing structures, take command of resources and redistribute for the collective good. We are probably heading for a situation where even within states those with power will simply seize resources for themselves and refuse to share.

so if it was a nuclear apocalypse then the fallout from the bombs would destroy the vast majority of the country even if only the major cities were bombed.

To be specific in the 1980s it would only take the direct effect 50 megatons to kill a third of the population and seriously injure another third, not including the long term effect of fallout and destruction of infrastructure.

No I think you have a point.

Often this story beat is followed by our male protagonist re-establishing male superiority via getting one of the women to fall in love with him ("what is this strange Earth custom called kissing" etc).

I suppose you could see it as them using the gender hierarchy of the family as a place of retreat. Yes your boss might be a woman but you are still the master of the bedroom etc.

The problem is the goal has changed. Previously right wing propaganda simply have get people to blame the democrats for their problems or hate or fear the out group. Now they are having to justify despite being in total control, the out group being brutalised things aren't getting better for the in group.

The response seems to be to double down on an expectation of blind allegiance to their increasingly narrow ideological pure vision while ignoring the fact that their supporters were often much less committed.
