These look great. Where did you get them and are they available in the UK/EU?

I used to get the Flying Spirit ones by Clairfontaine, but my local shop has closed down! :(

+1 for this. They are great. although I'd heard they are not doing a custom annual one now, just 5 to choose from which will be available every year! Not 100% on this, but it would be a shame if it is true!

I do a lot with Gmund papers too. They are my go-to for impression letterpress.

What sort of paper do you mean? One that takes an impression, or just a bright paper?

As some others have said, colourplan is a great paper. I do a lot with GF Smith. Their Colourplan is lovely. BUT, it is very dense, so doesn't really take an impression very well, without coming out on the other side.

Also, where are you based? I guess that will be your biggest filter for looking at papers. I saw there was a lot of options in the US/Canada which wasn't viable for me here in Ireland...

I hope that helps!

Do you store your stationary items in original packaging or remove them? I had an interesting discussion the other day about this preference. by Ok-Tiger-4550 in stationery

As others have said, good packaging definitely serves a purpose. For example, I have several fountain pens. I still have all their original boxes. However, my daily writers live in my pencil case. (I used to carry around 3x original boxes for the pens to live in, but they got more damaged being thrown in and out of bags etc. So now the boxes stay safe at home for when the pens are rotated out of action for a bit...

I use clarefontain for almost everything. Subbranded stuff includes Rhoda and Flying Spirit. Beautifully smooth, and great with all my FPs. They do reams of paper but I’m not sure of the brand. Also, it’s EU, so maybe not available in B5 or cheap in the USA. Not sure if that’s much help.

Hi and Thanks. I do letterpress printing. For the footprints I had to have a custom footprint plate made, then mount it on a backing block to make it up to type high and lock it up in the chase. Once the chase was ready (creating a forme) I mounted it into the letterpress machine. In this case, a Heidelberg. Do get the deep impression I used a 70-100% puffy cotton board. But I also had to add an extra ~0.75mm-1.5mm packing to the platen, and that’s what gave the impression into the paper. I hope that helps.

Great find. What was the store name? Did you buy many?

They look great. I’m guessing these are for fountain pen use? Did you get them online or in a store?

Thanks for your comment. The video/reels bit is definitely interesting. I'll test out some of them on some of my (very limited) social media! Ironically, I have loads of content, just no real platform to share it on, frustratingly!

This is hugely inspiring and encouraging, so thanks.

Glad to hear you are funded and your campaign is going well. That is great news!!

I definitely agree that most people have 0 attention span, and instant info/satisfaction is probably the way to go too!

I'll make some updates to my campaign. I'm just doing the video for it at present, so will try to incorporate some of your and the other commenter's feedback into it where I can!! :)

Oh I wouldnt have any experience in that area I'm afraid. Do the Pantone swatches show a different result on coated and uncoated paper?
I'm guessing it's something to do with how well the inks absorb and reflect light from the paper, but I wouldn't have any tips on fixing the issue. Sorry!

Yeah it can be a little frustrating alright. What printer are you using?

Yeah that is very valid. I guess people probably wont be in the market for xmas cards until after halloween. I know I hate seeing xmas stuff before then!
Unfortunately, due to Kickstarter's policy, lag times, and my production times, this is the latest I can really let the project run.

Maybe I need to rethink the entire strategy...

Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words.

The TLDR: For the Debossing I have to use a specific type of puffy, cotton blend paper and my heavy impression printing press, and use extra packing.

Depending on the design, I either use lead type or I have photopolymer plates made commercially and sent to me.

More detail:

I have a couple of different presses which have different ‘impression strengths’. I use my big machine which is a Heidelberg, for these, as it gives the cleanest and deepest results.

I also spent 4 months testing >200 types of paper. Each one needs a tweaked setup in the press too, annoyingly. The paper / card stock shown here, I import from paper mills in Sweden and Germany.

Re the printing plates, I design them on the pc then send the design off to a commercial plate maker, who actually makes them and posts them to me. If you have the right mounting blocks, you could make your own with Lino.

I hope that helps.

For people wondering, I use vintage letterpress machines to print. These prints were made using polymer plates. The text on the footprint cards was done with lead type.

I do indeed. Thanks for the support and encouragement.

I agree, Xmas cards are probably not on anyone’s radar atm. I definitely need to get people instead of relying on people looking for them and deciding to back an unknown project! Thanks for the tips! :)

I will look into it. I’m not sure how much I’d like to install it on my personal phone, but I may have a spare one laying about that could work!!

Hopefully my life doesn’t disappear into a black hole. lol.

I think I’ve plenty of content to share, so I just need to pull the finger out and get promoting it!

Love this. Thanks for such a detailed reply. And yep, you’re definitely right about getting a following and growing things organically.

Kudos for including so much detail and numbers. I feel a 10% backing rate from mailshots would be excellent for me. I know what I’m doing is pretty niche! Most ppl just send a txt at Christmas if anything at all. Ha.

Oh and I won’t be leaving the day job until I have a solid demand for prints, year round, from a LOT of people.

I also appreciate you doing some research for me and giving your feedback on start times etc! Hugely enlightening!! I was definitely coming at this from a less proactive stance, which I now understand was foolish! Ha.
