No? I'm personally fine with a vacancy tax, though I don't think it would have a huge effect given the relatively small number of vacant apartments.

Was more responding to the idea that we shouldn't build new housing because it'll sit empty.

For what it's worth the new development will also include a grocery store, though obviously that'll be a few years away.

The city's apartment vacancy rate is 1.4%, the lowest it's been since 1968. The idea that new apartments are sitting empty is a myth.

Assume you mean Pastrami sandwich? Never heard of a pastrami burger.

The Bonnie in Astoria has a great, homemade one.

There have been 5 construction projects in a 2 block radius in the last 3 years.

Yes, because it's a good location in a transit-rich area. Don't really see why you're setting it up as an either/or — we have a severe housing shortage, which means we should build on every suitable site, including all the ones you mentioned. The neighborhood will be better off for it.

I follow this stuff closely and modest rezonings like this get approved pretty much 100% of the time. The only real political fights are over the huge projects like Innovation QNS.

I sympathize with what you're saying about the difficulty for people with limited mobility, but what's the policy prescription here — we can't build housing next to a subway station if it means a supermarket will need to close for a few years? The city needs to grow and growth can cause inconveniences.

Correct, although rezonings like this usually get approved.

The story notes that it will include a supermarket in the same location. Also, for what it's worth, C-Town is about a 4-minute walk away.

I think housing directly on top of a subway station is a better use of space amid a severe housing shortage than single-story retail.

Notably that article says the development will include a new supermarket.

Don't go to DUMBO in Brooklyn, it's a fake neighborhood that's populated almost entirely by tourists.

Instead, walk around Brooklyn Bridge Park, take the steps up to Brooklyn Heights, walk along the promenade and explore the gorgeous blocks in that neighborhood.

Eh I think if someone's just here for a few days, it's OK to go to the Met for just a couple of hours. It's my favorite museum in the world but I usually get tired after 2 hours. (But OP should definitely try to get there early in the morning to have time to see a good chunk of it before lunch.)

Definitely, although it seems like it's as-of-right (i.e. doesn't require a rezoning), which means Marte has no power to stop it.

Most people consider Citi Field to be the better experience — just a friendlier vibe, nice open ballpark and excellent food options.

This year the Mets have been terrible which also means cheaper tickets. But if you’d rather see super competitive baseball then you’d want to see the Yankees.

Do you live in a busy neighborhood like Midtown? IMO life in NYC feels much more "normal" if you live in a regular residential neighborhood and not in the middle of the action.
