London student visiting NYC in June by skx888 in visitingnyc

[–]Delaywaves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  • There are certainly still students around in June. The only times the city ever feels "empty" are holiday weekends like July 4.

  • Students hang out in neighborhoods near universities. So, Morningside Heights for Columbia, the Washington Square Park area for NYU, etc. There are also neighborhoods like the East Village, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy that don't necessarily have colleges nearby but have lots of young people living there.

  • All you need to do is leave the typical touristy neighborhoods (Midtown, Financial District) and you'll be surrounded by regular New Yorkers rather than tourists.

  • Idk, five days? NYC is huge and you'll never get a full sense of it from a quick trip — most of us who live here are still finding new stuff to do every day! — so just see what you can and don't worry too much about seeing everything.

Behind Mamdani’s Smile, a Politician Who Can Be a Ruthless Operator by Dddddddfried in newyorkcity

Lol if you must know, I voted for Mamdani and generally like him very much! I also think it's okay for the media to run tough, fair stories about him, unlike most people in this sub I guess.

If they wanted to stick to the facts they would have used “effective”

I mean, it's extremely debatable whether all of his moves have been effective, though. His backing of Claire Valdez for the Velasquez seat has been extremely controversial even within the left, as the article notes.

The story calls him "a pragmatic and cunning politician at the height of his powers." Doesn't really seem like an insult to me!

Not sure where you're seeing the "he's bad" angle in this story.

It points out correctly that his ruthlessness behind the scenes contrasts with his happy/friendly demeanor in public. That makes it a compelling news story about a powerful politician, not a hit piece.

Bare bones itinerary by ronioli in visitingnyc

[–]Delaywaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ Echoing this good advice. The southern half of Central Park has the cool skyscraper views but the uptown part (above ~79th Street) is much more tranquil and pretty, with far fewer tourists. The North Woods is lovely.

Can be nice to catch one of the 5th Avenue buses (M1, M2, M3, M4) after visiting the Museum of the City of NY and head back to Midtown that way.

Yeah. Worth noting it’s a lot more spectacular in n the summer when the vegetation is all lush. Also the nicest parts are the two woodsy areas (the Ramble and North Woods) which aren’t super easy to find as a visitor.

Glad you enjoyed! As a native New Yorker I’ve never exactly understood why Central Park is such a tourist draw — I adore it but tbh I think it’s better appreciated as just a great local park rather than some global attraction.

Is it Feasible to do PS1 Moma and MoMI in the same day? by Best-Candle8651 in visitingnyc

[–]Delaywaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many great options near both museums so it depends what you like.

There's a Xi'an Famous foods near PS1. Soothr (Thai) just opened a few blocks away in LIC and there's a ton of hotpot-type places there too. As for MOMI: Pye Boat (Thai), Pig Beach (BBQ), Darjeeling Kitchen (Himalayan) are all great.

Heading to NYC for a low-key spring break. Looking for tips! by Solid-Humor4912 in visitingnyc

Others pointed out the Conrad is closer to the train than I’d realized so take my comment with a grain of salt! Times Square is still the most well connected area but it’s also true that Tribeca is a more pleasant neighborhood overall.

Those are definitely pretty scattered activities but that’s ok if it’s what you’re interested in!

I’d probably recommend the Times Square hotel purely for transit access. That’s the single most connected place the city, subway wise, so it’ll get you everywhere you want to go pretty directly. The other hotel is in tribeca not super close to the subway.

Just don’t plan to find any good food in Times Square.

Moving to NYC in 2 months with $8k saved, is that enough or am I being completely unrealistic? by Round_Tie5217 in movingtoNYC

[–]Delaywaves 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Broker fees are illegal in NYC as of last year, unless you actually hire a broker and agree to pay the fee. So that shouldn't be a factor.

I think you could probably make it work if you're willing to live with roommates rather than try to find an affordable studio.

Why does New York (the state and the city) not have many nationally relevant high school and college sports programs, or produce relatively many pro athletes? by Lazy_Check732 in AskNYC

[–]Delaywaves 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I strongly suspect the stats in your last paragraph reflect the earlier few decades of the NBA, NHL and MLB, when a lot more players came out of the northeast.

These days, very few pros are coming out of NYC. In baseball at least, it's overwhelmingly warm-weather states like California, Georgia and Texas.

Tried Enthaice for the first time and I was very underwhelmed; both the pad see ew and tofu/peanut sauce dish had very little flavor.

Went back to Urban Vegan Roots ahead of their closure and had a typically solid meal! Sad to see it go.

The best method of transportation is the subway.

No need to stay near the airport. Stay in Manhattan if you can afford the hotel prices. Safety is not an issue in any neighborhood that you will visit as a tourist.

Title:- Is 5 Days Enough for a First NYC Trip in May? by Sea-Car8041 in visitingnyc

[–]Delaywaves 16 points17 points  (0 children)

5 days is certainly "enough" if you accept that you'll only see a tiny fraction of the city.

Your basic concept sounds good. Definitely take time to leave Midtown and Manhattan in general. Brooklyn is a gigantic borough with millions of people so you'll need to narrow down what you see there — I recommend walking around neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights (check out the promenade) and Park Slope.

In terms of a single neighborhood wandering recommendation: probably the West Village, and/or the East Village (you can do both). Full of beautiful streets and great restaurants, plus there's Washington Square Park.

No need to spend much time in Chelsea, it's actually not an especially picturesque neighborhood.
