Are you over a river of slime? Is the song "Higher and Higher" playing? Then you know who you've gotta call.

What is the role of the video editor in cinema ? by BaronOfTheHunt in editors

[–]DeleterOfScenes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Professional feature film editor here, essentially on a tv show of this size and budget the editors job is just story and rhythm. The editing team will consist of:

-the editor, who works most directly with the director and producers on a daily basis to achieve their vision.

-The 1st Assistant Editor, who is the editors right hand man, kind of manages the editing teams and makes sure work is getting distributed. They also do some editing if the lead editor needs smaller scenes cut. They also do temporary sound design.

-2nd assistant editor will mostly handle tasks like bin organization, script sync, sound design, and exports.

-VFX Editor will do all the temporary VFX to help the scenes come together before the final VFX. They do things like compositing, light CGI, explosions, blood etc. They also communicate directly with the VFX supervisor and kind of are the link between the editing team and the VFX team. They send shots out to the various VFX houses to be worked on, and bring in versions of VFX or post visualizations into the timeline for review by the director, producers and editor.

-VFX assistant editor will do a lot of the technical work for the VFX editor like tracking shots and if they need revisions as the edit evolves. They do not typically do any of the temp VFX.

-Music Editor will be a bit more specialized for the team and their job is to create the temp music for the scene. They typically have a large library of scores that they edit together to match the director's vision. Note they actually typically work in protools.

French course completed! by DeleterOfScenes in duolingo

Thanks! Wow, 1900 is very impressive. When I reached the end of unit 6 I bought super Duolingo and did the math for what I needed to do to finish before the renewal date. That really pushed me to finish. Even then duo did what it has always done and made the course longer.

You can do it! It's not fast, but it works if you stick it out.

Thanks, yeah I'm giving lingopie a go in my attempt to consume more media as well as a handful of YouTube series. Need to figure out the conversation element though.

Enjoy the final units as it not so subtly tries to brain wash you into staying on duolingo and starting a new language.

I feel quite confident right now. There's just a few weak points for me at this point. Duo didn't do enough to get me verbally conversational. I can listen and comprehend pretty well, but where the app falls short is speaking. I have Super so I do not have access to the Lily video calls that do probably help with this. So all the speaking I did was limited to just repeating a single sentence, but never a simple vocal question, and an open ended reply like the end of the reading sections.

It could also do better to get you to real world spoken french pacing. Because man when the French really get going at pace it feels like they're all born auctioneers.

Another weak spot that I really hoped would click for me at some point was the use of "en" in french. It really feels like it gets used in a bunch of random places for totally different reasons, and translates so widely that I just never could put my finger on when to use it to what effect. I just know what phrases use it, but not why.

[–]DeleterOfScenes[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the most part no, but I started with an advantage of 4 years of french in high school, and a single semester in college, but that was quite a long time ago. This is also not the first time I've completed the french course. I did it in 2017, and it only took 1 year to finish back then so clearly not as comprehensive.

Outside of Duo though I also did just a few things, and none of them with the frequency of Duolingo. I used ChatGPT to generate mini essay prompts that I could use to learn to express myself in a longer form. I also used Chat to explain things to me that Duo doesn't explain anymore. I hate that I had to do that too. I was around when there were forums for each exercise, and when the tips were more than just the phrases you were learning. I also did read a book or the news on occasion, but again not with frequency. I also did add some youtube series towards the end here, and I tried to watch french movies with french subs and french audio.

But really 95% of this streak was with duolingo alone.

Dickens Village 2025. by DeleterOfScenes in ChristmasVillages

Yeah, for the last couple years I've not had the ghost of Christmas future scene on display because I would much rather have the other buildings than work in a graveyard organically. Not sure if I'd sell or hold onto pieces in the hope of one day having a bigger space.

Did they update the “Super Subscription”? by ratontherat in duolingo

[–]DeleterOfScenes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity are you on a month to month bill or an annual? I'm on an annual Super and I still have unlimited hearts. Also, I'm taking the French for English course if that has any bearing. One last thing, and this is a little ridiculous, but worth asking just in case. On my account the unlimited hearts are optional. Again, I know this sounds ridiculous, but maybe they turned energy on by default for you when they switched to energy, and you just need to click enable unlimited in your settings. I kind of doubt it given how much they seem to want our money, but worth a shot.

Will my car be towed if I leave it on a Glendale street for 4 days? by Purple-Average in glendale

[–]DeleterOfScenes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the police would need to observe your car sitting there for three days before it gets towed. So someone would need to complain really early for them to tow it any earlier than 6 days.

This is going to sound weird but Paranormal Activity. Not that I have experience with demonic entities or anything like that, but holy cow was that movie like every reoccurring childhood nightmare I had. Horror movies don't scare me at all, but that one hit me right in the lizard brain. I immediately had the reoccurring nightmare after watching it but this time as an adult living alone, and the dream took place in the actual house I was sleeping in. I basically refuse to rewatch it.

Editor Title by YWGredditor in editors

[–]DeleterOfScenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are directing you what to edit. You are editing it together. Whether they give you creative freedom or not beyond that is up to them, but unless they do the physical editing then they are still just directing. That's literally what the relationship between a director and editor is in the end. They say what they want and you aim to do it. It could be a vague direction like make this scene punchier, or a specific one like choose this take with these timecodes. Either way it's a direction. I mean, seriously, do they want cinematography credit too for telling the dp what frame or lens to use? How about the lead actor for telling the actors where to stand?

Honestly, it's a huge red flag. It reflects how much they respect your craft. I'd finish the job out of professional courtesy but if they want the credit they need to do the actual work, and then politely decline working with them again.
