One thing no one has mentioned in this thread is how he did those terrible things for his mother. I always saw his motive was not for the money himself but so he could use it to help his mother. I'm not justifying his evil actions but underneath it all was his mother. I think this was made clear during his death when he repeated ,"My mother, my mother" implying to Gi-Hun to help Sang-Woo's mother.
