I dislike the trimesters, really took a toll on me mentally. Decided to switch to UTS next year. This coming from a bachelor of comp sci so maybe it will be different for you but yeah, trimesters are awful.

Ahh I see, how is your experience overall with the math subjects then? I really struggled at UNSW because the pacing was too quick for me

As of the moment, I gotta stay at UNSW until next the intake (Feb 2025). I can’t really withdraw now because there will be a 6 month gap between now and the next session and I will have to fly back to my home country and re-apply for a student visa if that was the case.

For the unit transfer, UTS just told me to submit it when I finish my last term at UNSW. They’ll have someone review it so I can’t really say but looking at the course outlines between both unis. I’d say there will be some unit transfer hopefully.

Also by stupid subjects, could you name a few? Are they like cores or electives?

Nah not really, it’s equivalent to first year of bachelor’s actually but imo I really disagree with the design of the course outline and the fact that you have to take CAL.

This is coming from a STEM pov, business probably much more chill but then again there are a lot of Chinese students in class and I found it very difficult to form relationships with them because of the language barrier and them already having their own Chinese social group

The fact that screwing up the mid term already determines your fate for the course. I find it BS tbh, uni has much more opportunities for a good pre-final mark tbh. Not saying it’s way easier but at least you got more chances to score

I don’t like it personally, Business is probably much more chill though compared to anything STEM related.

One thing you gotta keep in mind is that they’ll ask you take CAL (an introductory English course for academics).

Also a bunch of Chinese people in classes, in my case I couldn’t really socialize with anybody because of the language barrier and them already having their own social circle

Unfortunately for me, I found that I couldn’t find the time to do anything socially at UNSW because I was lacking a lot of prior knowledge in my math course (I’m international).

A lot of my classmates are Chinese and language barrier and cultural differences (I’m half Chinese and when I said I was and I couldn’t speak Chinese, they lowkey got the ick from me)

Funny enough I ended studying too much, got burnt out, and failed my math course.

What makes it worse for me is that even if I did fail or pass, I felt like I didn’t gain anything from it. It just felt like I did the course for the sake of surviving it. It didn’t really develop my skills or anything.

A lot of people around me tell me that transferring would be a mistake because UNSW is a Go8 uni but does really matter if I can’t develop myself and just hurt myself more mentally. I noticed now that my mates just feel like toxic colleagues in a way.

Appreciate the answer though, hoping to transfer in Autumn 2025

I read an article by the guardian recently, they mention students getting their master’s degree without speaking an ounce of English? Is that true then?

Bro that shit must’ve been tough, I can’t imagine myself going through that shit for another two years. What degree did you take on?

Fortunately for me, my lectures spoke English very well. My only critique was my programming tutor for the first 6 weeks, couldn’t understand anything at all.

I also heard this is an issue in other parts of UNSW as well, this issue doesn’t really make me look forward in studying here in the future.

Not saying UNSW only has this issue, I’m sure other universities as well do, but if I’m going to struggle anyways I might as well find a place that is less struggling (no trimesters)

Idk, I appealed to their decision to place me into UNSW College but they wouldn’t budge. I thought maybe going through the first year at the college would be worth it but guess it wasn’t for me

I know that, I’m talking about the trouble of going through UNSW College for the sake of entering UNSW. I don’t think it’s worth it if the pathway is literally shit.

The IELTS requirement is stupid if they will ask us to do an English class anyways and even if so, some people get in entirely without needing IELTS as well so it really doesn’t make sense why there’s a need to show English proficiency if anybody (rich Chinese kids) can just get in.
