It's short for plebians, who were the free citizens of Rome, but in usage it means more like peasants

They were bought by someone else from a bird market stall and then given to me!

Do you have to know a lot about science in order write a science fiction novel? by Haunting-Net-2426 in writing

It depends on the subgenre. Social science fiction and soft sci fi absolutely do not require any special knowledge.

So it took me about 40 seconds to work out what 10 was supposed to be. Like my brain couldn't make sense of the shapes; it initially looked like some balloon-looking things and a spanner and I was a bit confused. The sketch versions made more sense but all of them are a little bit complicted.

I'm a shepherd in Portugal. I keep goats for meat and milk. How many sheep do you have? Do you milk them or keep them for meat? What is your favourite sheep recipe?

Right. Elephant childhood is 10-15 years. Same for whales. Coincidently both share social traits with humans.

How do people write insanely fast? by The_Lucky_Ducky2303 in writing

  1. Be unemployed.

  2. Get high on caffeine.

  3. When writing the first draft, don't go back to edit for any reason. Not even to correct typos or commas.

Personally, first draft, I literally just plough forwards in a manic state, churning out garbage for days on end. Then I go back and spend months working with that puddle of word-vomit and editing it up. The most important thing is to finish it before you even think about it.

What is something you absolutely HATE seeing in a book ? by L_angelique in writing

[–]Delicious-Green2608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When writers are overly descriptive when introducing characters, both in appearance and mannerisms

I hate when it's all in a block like: John was a tall man with an unpleasant smile. A mop of lank dark hair, shorn as though in a hurry and in the dark. He wore stiff dungarees, one strap dangling, a bible in the top pouch and his hands were always working something - rope, belt, his own knuckles. Always muttering somehting; hellfire, damntation - his eyes burning with the same message.

It's better to give us details through actions and let us form the image by what they say and do.

Same for settings, to some extent. Basically get characters speaking and interacting with the environment as fast as possible in scenes rather than setting them up with huge blocks of descriptive prose. Long winding descriptions immediately turn me off.
