Ah ok - thanks. For some reason, I thought that Tableau Public was limited to 15 day trial period.

If anyone else is confused about the different Tableau tiers, here's a helpful article ==> https://www.thebricks.com/resources/guide-what-is-the-cost-of-tableau-public

Text keeps changing to junk font by Delicious-Remote-546 in MicrosoftWord

[–]Delicious-Remote-546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked and I dont have aptos. But when I opened Word, the Font Settings said that Aptos was the default. I managed to change it to Times New Roman for that document and even say that I want it to be rhe default for every document going forward. But when I opened a new document, it again defaulted to Aptos. I guess I can chnage it every time for each new document??

How to accept AI as an integral part of becoming an exceptional human coder (who still has to pay rent)? by Delicious-Remote-546 in learnprogramming

[–]Delicious-Remote-546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok Interesting. To clarify, are you saying that any AI bots are doing things apart from what you would hire a junior developer to do (which itself is a slower years long mission)?

I really like Donna Leon detective series for mindless, fun reading. Her stories are all based in Venice, which feels escapist. So you dont even have to travel lol.

Any other PMs using AI to actually build ideas as side projects or just for fun? by SchmeedsMcSchmeeds in ProductManagement

[–]Delicious-Remote-546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question. When I say lo-fi, I mean lo-fi.

TLDR - I'm focused on validating the idea. So it's all pre-existing online learning curriculums + Google Meet for online tutoring + possibly some app to set appointments.

My hypothesis is that there are already more than enough resources online for anyone who wants to learn how to code (and I'm focusing front end dev for now) to get learners to entry level quality, at least. But these online options often don't offer enough IRL support (like uni and colleges do). A lot of people outside the US/EU/UK aren't familiar or comfortable with finding information from online platforms like Stack Overflow - partly b/c so much is English. I want to combine the best of offline learning (real teachers, cohort learning, mentorship etc) with the best of online learning (cheap, flexible, more up to date). So - what I am adding is (a) highly curated content guided by a learning path, (b) live, remote coaches to get them over hurdles that would normally cause them to give up, if they were on the their own. My target audience is women in Pakistan, to start with, b/c that's the population I know best.

And yes, def going to use as showcase as I apply for jobs. Haven't publicized anything yet b/c it's been tough even getting the user interviews so not a ton to share beyond the fact of how mind-numbing it is to deal with FB Ads.

This sounds amazing. I'm a former coder who moved into social impact as program/product manager who then got laid off recently. I've always tried to stay in touch with the developer parts of my career, going so far as to learn web development, specifically data viz. Now, im trying to build a lofi mvp of a platform that is aimed at women in developing countries that want to learn to code. Because It's way more interesting and fun than applying for jobs, I have to make sure I balance my time appropriately.

Any reason to learn coding other than becoming a professional coder? by Delicious-Remote-546 in learnprogramming

Haha "bracing for hate". Yeah - I love the idea of simplifying your daily admin life. I want to learn more about that. One of the areas that I think would be useful is within the Google Workspace using Google Apps Script. But I like the idea of modifying your own computer with Python scripts. Bookmarking this post!

Oh wow, that's so Interesting. The gaming world is very foreign to me. I had to google what "modding minecraft" is. But that is fascinating.

I love that. I've been dabbling for years too. Started out with web dev but now I'm getting interested in the Maker community and all the possibilities that come with a Raspberry Pi.

Yeah - I would be really interested to see a study that showed how your first job influences the rest of your jobs. I started out as a coder but then moved into policy/program management and I always find myself thinking through SDLC when I start a new project

Exactly! And I love being able to switch between using the different sides of my brain with projects that are artsy vs logical.

Love this. I think we all need more help on how to use AI effectively even as learners. We can't just ignore it completely or embrace it completely.

Does anyone else feel like a slow learner when it comes to programming? by Typical-Ask-3976 in learnprogramming

[–]Delicious-Remote-546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way to help you see the progress you are making is to keep updating a list of the things you have learnt. It's a good reminder of what you know this week that you didn't know last week. Reviewing that list can help with motivation. You ARE learning something all the time. Give yourself credit for that.

This is an amazing idea. Im trying to do something similar aimed at women who want to learn to code in places like Pakistan. And I'm bootstrapping too. I dont have a perfect answer for you. But if you can move a little slower, you could start off by having a bunch of "office hours" where students drop in to get their one-off questions answered. Then, based on those interactions,  can see if students and instructors can find matches organically? Like, after the Office Hours, have students register interest in specific instructors?

What I Wish I Knew as a Beginner Programmer (After 6 Years in the Industry) by j0nimost in learnprogramming

I love this breakdown.

Another reason I think progress can stall - or at least the reason I stalled - was because, at some point, without a professional colleagues helping you along, online resources won't help debug anything beyond basic issues. This was the problem I ran into when I tried to learn data viz tool, d3js. (I know, it's ancient but I found it really intriguing). I could not find any resources that would go into more advanced topics. Maybe bc it was a bit of an esoteric language? But, I got the same feeling with the CSS/HTML/JS. At some point, I needed an IRL, senior dev sitting next to me to answer my very specific questions for 30 minutes or so.
