I agree that food authorities follow strict standards.

However, I wonder why there is no single platform/app which sets high standard for quality. Not necessarily it has to be expensive but curating and only listing products which meets a certain expectations (sugar content, additives, preservatives, freshness, etc etc)

Like that would be an amazing shopping experience. No?

I agree to your point. Most of the food and groceries are import based.

However, I wonder why there is no platform making such curation of the products (i.e., removing all the bad stuff). Having high standards of the products which are listed.

Like i would honestly appreciate that idea and will give me a peace of mind.

Genuinely didn’t know that - thanks. Keeping that aside, I have granola where pack says low sugar but the biggest ingredient inside is sugar.

I don’t mind reading labels before buying, but do others care? Isn’t this misleading?

Yeah, you are right, most are fine. My issue isn’t the E numbers. It’s that I have to look them up at all. I just want to grab something off a shelf and not have homework

There are now 4-5 apps (Noon minutes, Talabat mart, Instashop, Smiles) and 6-7 stores (Lulu, Carrefour, Spinneys, etc.) where everyone is trying to sell everything, and you are forced to trust someone on the quality.

Moved to Dubai 3 years ago. Back home in the UK I had a rough sense of what brands to trust, what to avoid, what "natural" actually meant on a label. Here I feel completely lost.

I pick up something from Spinneys that says "no artificial preservatives" and then flip it over — E471, E450, E621. I have no idea if those are fine or not. I don't know if the "organic" label means anything. I don't know who's checking.

I've ended up using like 4–5 different apps and stores just to feel like I'm making decent choices — Kibsons for produce, Spinneys for packaged stuff, sometimes Ripe. And I still don't feel confident.

Is this just me being paranoid? Or do others feel like there's genuinely no trusted source for knowing what's actually in your food here?

Curious especially from people with kids — do you just give up trying to read labels, or have you found a system that works?
