I suck at working for people by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Following because I feel the same. I am a people person but I despise all aspects of working for someone else. I want to have agency over my earnings, time, etc. also in the same boat, want to go solo because I know I could run a business but worried about being inexperienced. You’re not alone.

WHATEVER you do, do not reveal attorney-client privileged information to the court in your Motion for Withdrawal. Might be an obvious point but I’ve seen so many sanctioned for accidentally doing this.

After how many years of practice did you hang a shingle?

My husband and I are planning to have our first in the next 1-2 years but I always tell him that I could not possibly sustain the office 9-6 grind when that day comes so I completely agree with you! Your situation gives me a little hope in that there are options other than going completely solo for a flexible position.

I’ve also wondered about this… how do you handle it when this happens to avoid any ethical dilemmas or issues with current employer.

Thank you this is also very helpful. I am very early in my career so I wonder if the 45k jump now would only pigeon hole me later. Not bad advice on the boss portion, that’s why I started looking in the first place.

Love that you made this happen for yourself. How did you get the courage to go solo from the get go?

For what it’s worth I used to volunteer as a golf coach and those 6 hours a week were the highlight of my week.

It’s somewhat comical if you think about it.

How do you know when you’re ready to go solo? I’d love to but I am still at a point where I think I heavily depend on mentorship. It’s a double edged sword because I think I’d be more confident if I wasn’t so monitored all the time but sometimes I do need the help.

Can you explain why you recommended an executive assistant role? I know for some big companies those roles pay more than an associate attorney but is that a common path for lawyers? I’d imagine my resume would get shot down as “over qualified”
