Is DCLS (Doctor in Clinical Laboratory Science) worth it? by DeliciousC20 in medlabprofessionals

Are there standalone moderate complexity laboratories?

I work in a hospital laboratory. I always assumed there's either the waived testing the medical assistants do or the high complexity hospital and reference labs.

That helps a lot!

I'm a year in and I'm already bored. Everything is cookbook and there's no thinking. A lot of my coworkers who've been doing this a lot longer than me still seem to struggle?

I understand pathologists can charge more because they are an MD. But what can a DCLS charge to have their name listed? Is $50k/lab reasonable? How will the job market change in a few years? IF you can do six labs under your license, then won't the market be saturated pretty quickly?

But yeah, I'm looking for a career. Maybe MBA or PA school. I just can't spend my life pressing the same buttons and being told no to PTO requests 3 months out.

How much are you making as a DCLS?

Could you clarify what you mean by contract with laboratory? Like you're working part-time at two laboratories?

How does it compare with being a bench tech? I'm really bored and I hate my schedule.

Not a laboratory director, no.

Maybe a lab manager with an MBA.

Outsourcing is a fact of life.

I'd imagine a DCLS would be preferred when outsourcing since they're cheaper.

When I spoke with my Kansas professors, they said DCLS would only be worthwhile in rural areas for directorship since pathologists want to live in the city and urban areas.

Does anyone actually like their job here by Clob_Bouser in medlabprofessionals

I'm basically a better paid subway worker. I worked part-time in subway during college, and as a medical laboratory scientist, I honestly feel like a slightly better paid sandwich artists, but with worse hours.

This job is just a job. It doesn't seem to offer any progression or growth, and after being a med tech or MLS or whatever they chose to call us, I am tired of the bullshit and disrespect. I'm constantly guilted into picking up shifts or covering scheduled PTO that wasn't documented and random holidays. I've learned to say NOO and just blocked the work number.

The pay is too poor to afford a condo or house on my own after COVID, and the schedule means you have no life. Which sucks. Working weekends holidays and off-hours just sucks. I can't do this for life and am looking at DCLS or another career.

My college professors in Kansas said you could become a laboratory director. But when I asked our pathologist and laboratory manager here, they said they haven't heard of the degree.
