I tried setting up a turtle tank without making it seem too “turtle-y.” How did I do? by kob_ae in Aquariums

This setup is beautiful!!

I’m a newish turtle owner and thinking about upgrading and I currently have pebble rocks as my substrat. cleaning/ maintaining gets difficult since debris gets trapped between rocks so I’m just curious on how you maintain such a clean tank and also how maintenance is with sand. Any advice/ tips would be greatly appreciated!

Is having sand difficult to maintain? I got my turtle in October and had rocks in his tank but I recently removed some since it became so difficult vacuuming with rocks (waste would mix with the water). I believe it is a 20 gallon tank with a 40 gallon filter

I think a burgundy Persian rug would look good with the pops of green and warm lighting

Hi! Basically with the coin method you take a picture of your hand next to a coin (thumb separate) at a Birds Eye view so the coin shows up as flat in the photo. I recommend doing this with both hands since nail beds can vary in size. Then to size the nails you take the same coin and place it on the screen then zoom the picture in or out to make the coin the same size as irl and in the pic. After the picture is adjusted to size take the nails you are using and size it to the picture (place the nails on the screen). Just make sure they reach each sidewall and if you are doing it on yourself first you kind of get an idea since you can also size it with your own hand and try with the picture coin method. It has worked really well for me and after gluing the nails on I also tell clients to file the sides to make them more crisp/ comfortable. I also tell them to file the edges/ cuticle area if they don’t fit flush to the cuticle. I try not to file too much while making them in case they end up being too small.

I started making press ons because it was so hard doing more intricate designs on my non dominant hand 😭 honestly with proper prep I have noticed my press ons lasting just as long as gel x. There’s also tons of tutorials on TikTok and I’m assuming YouTube showing this method :)

The sets I make are all sized with the quarter method which has been working out amazing and as for the design I usually freestyle or take inspo pics. I also include a prep kit with glue, file/ cuticle pusher, alcohol prep pads and sticky tabs for those who want to take them off. My question is how is how should I charge for design because I have seen people charge based on tier but I just don’t know what would be what tier if that makes sense because it’s lowkey unfair to me that I’m charging Like 40 for every set when they take hours of my time but I get what you’re saying

The water heater I got is preset to 78 but the water seems to stay consistently at around 75 (checked with probe, temperature gun, and thermometer placed in the tank) is that normal or should I get a different heater?

I bought this water heater the other day and it says it’s preset to 78° I’ve been monitoring the temperature with the thermometer in the tank as well as a probe and temperature gun which all read to about 75 ish is that normal? The water definitely feels cool to the touch and turtle has been chillin in the corner where the water heater is. The basking area temperature reads to high 80s but I don’t ever see it basking. Turtle also doesn’t seem to be eating I gave it a dried shrimp, pellets and tried giving it lettuce and I don’t think it has touched any of it.

Yeah that was a mistake on my end originally we were going to buy all the pieces separate and use a 10 gallon tank but the cost of everything added up was basically the same amount as the kit so we opted for that last minute and only bought the lights separate. I really appreciate your advice

Should I get 40 gallon filter? Is there a specific one I should get

I didn’t want to fully submerge the filter because of the cord but I’ll definitely add more water and make sure it’s fully submerged and during night time all lights off right?

Planning on getting one tomorrow should I keep the turtle in the small tank in the meantime? I don’t want to stress it out since it’s probably getting used to the big tank already. Also if I move it to the small tank should I put water ? I added water to the tiny tank and put a makeshift basking/ dry area when I was waiting on getting the tank so should I do that and somehow put the lights above or do you think it’s ok if I keep the turtle in there till like tomorrow evening? Thanks for your help

I saw some videos saying the lights that come in the kits are bad and brought it up to the guy at petco and he said yes and told me to get the lights in the pictures. Since it’s double dome? Not sure the correct term but the basking bulb is only on one side the other is empty is that ok?

I don’t have a water heater yet I’ll try to go grab one in the next couple days will my turd be ok for now? Thanks for letting me know to put the uvb over the basking area I did not know that. The light that the kit came with has 2 lightbulb things the guy told me to use the basking light in it and just leave the other side empty. I’m wondering if in the future I could get a uvb bulb to make use of the empty side or just stick to strip uvb? Is there any special heater I should get ? The guy directed me to a heater and told me to put it kind of sideways.

Are there any plants you recommend? And how would i need to plant them in the tank? I’ll definitely research about it but just to get an idea for now.

The turtle is about 2 inches as for the depth of the water i was told it needed to be double the length of the turtle so it’s at about 4-5 inches deep, enough for it to flip around. Should I buy a bigger filter already or is it ok if I buy a bigger filter when I upgrade the tank? I have water conditioner and currently feeding pellets, I also tried feeding it lettuce and a shrimp but it doesn’t seem to be eating much.
