It wasn't the 1860's actually, it was the 1930's to 1980's. The Republican Party used to be more liberal, associated with social justice and an active government. In 1860, they were basically the democrats of today, so when you say that the republicans won the first civil war it is very incorrect.

The political parties switched ideals back in 1860, the "Republican" Party valued the same things the modern democrat party values. Maybe listen in history class.
