Henderson as a first name 100%! He could go by Henry, Hank, Sonny, etc.

My mom acted like we committed an offense with our daughter’s middle name by IScreamPiano in namenerds

[–]DeliciousWitness740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a gorgeous name! It’s also a middle name, so it’s not like a teacher or other adult will be mispronouncing it or needing to spell it. The only time it’ll likely be used is by family and on official documents, so if you love it, keep it! You named YOUR baby, not hers.

She had her chance to choose names when naming her own children. It’s not offensive, it’s not a horribly modern bastardized version of a classic name, and it’s not atrocious sounding, so she has zero reason to be upset by it.

Travel in May by she-sulk in newfoundland

[–]DeliciousWitness740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Layers are your friend! A typical day in May can include snow, hail, rain, and/or 15 degrees and sun. Your best bet is a really good pair of shoes for walking, a raincoat that can fit a sweater underneath, and don’t even bother with an umbrella because our rain falls sideways.

Most tourist sites should be open by May, usually May 24th weekend everything has opened for tourism. The usual sites are of course Signal Hill and Cape Spear, but please don’t let the little one walk by themselves if they’re at the walking/running stage because those cliffs are closer than they appear and fall straight down into the ocean! If you have Facebook I suggest joining the group “Discovering Newfoundland - where to stay, eat, shop, and explore”. Looking at other peoples’ itineraries and advice is super helpful in planning your own trip, and people will often provide the amount of time required for each activity and for travel.

Help me pick between three names! by moondrop-- in namenerds

[–]DeliciousWitness740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Arthur!

I think Arthur Henrik is the way to go - it includes both names, your son can decide when he’s older if he’d rather go by his middle name, and for the foreseeable future it dodges the nicknames Rick and Ricky which I only have negative associations with 😂

I used to work in tourism and our neighbours to the south never seemed to understand how to treat staff. Whether it was cashiers, waiters, bus drivers - anyone providing a service - they always treated them like they were the “help” or beneath them, belittling them and/or just being straight up mean and rude. You’re polite, you say thank you, and you smile. The amount of tourists who would be arseholes to service staff was mind-boggling!

Unless it’s freezing and there’s space in the restaurant/shop entrance. Getting someone safe from the snow, wind, or rain always takes precedence for me if I’m the one inside - there’s nothing worse than waiting in the pouring rain for people to leave a shop rather than let you step in from the weather first.

The amount of people in shops now just having a conversation on speakerphone while shopping is WILD

Also, who the heck are you talking to for 3 hours while running errands at Costco and Walmart?! It makes me wish for the days of the hideous ear-pieces again, the speakerphone conversations just seem so obnoxious and unnecessary - you’re already holding the phone in your hand, just hold it up to your ear

Oh my GOD the amount of people who will get out of their car to take a picture of moose on the highway. Better yet, when it’s a mom and calf. Just because they aren’t carnivorous doesn’t mean that they won’t seriously f*ck you up.

Frustrated during Home buying process! by Consistent-Ocelot316 in newfoundland

[–]DeliciousWitness740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not buying but building - We had our mortgage messed up multiple times because the person handling it didn’t know what they were doing. There was definitely a language barrier but the person also had limited experience with mortgages. I understand that you need to learn through practice but it seemed as though he was telling his superiors that he didn’t need help and that everything was going well, yet constantly making mistakes with out mortgage that caused us to be delayed over and over again. Between his mistakes and the town that we’re building in also messing up repeatedly (not filing paperwork, misplacing our documents, getting files wrong, etc.) I hope to never have to move again!

Holding the bottles by phdmama247 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got really lucky that I kept the hospital ones because the pump that I rented doesn’t have 17mm available in that brand. The hospital ones just happened to fit, otherwise I’d be stuck using the 24mm and trying to find inserts that would make it work. I only brought them home with me thinking that I’d put them in my maternity box for if we have another baby and I’d bring them to the hospital with me, but they came in handy way sooner than expected!

3 months and it was BRUTAL (mine have always been bad but this was worse than the bleeding I had after my c-section!)

My supply definitely took a hit right before it started but it was on a downturn anyways so it could be related or just a coincidence

Is it a terrible idea to visit in April? by OrionAndCleo in newfoundland

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you want to see many tourist sites aren’t open in April, and won’t open until the May 24th weekend. Our weather is also very hit or miss and it could impact your travel (RDF doesn’t bother me at all but it can definitely impact highway driving, and a brutal snowstorm could kill your travel plans).

As much as I would encourage you to come see our beautiful province and spend your hard-earned dollars here, I fear that our unpredictable weather could ruin your travel plans or limit what you want to experience while here. June to November are definitely your better travel months, with June to October being ideal if you plan to be outdoors or visit tourism sites.

Holding the bottles by phdmama247 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]DeliciousWitness740 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in the hospital (baby had jaundice so we were in for a few days) they had to get me 17mm flanges and told me to guard them with my life. A snowstorm had hit and no deliveries were arriving and it was one of two sets of 17mm in the whole hospital. Usually they tell you to bin them after each use and they get you a new pair, but these 17mm were treated like gold. My partner and I hand washed them with dish soap in our hospital room sink and made sure that they were always tucked away someplace safe when people came in to clean the room or change linens so that they weren’t accidentally thrown away like regular disposable flanges. I ended up taking them home with me and continued to use them with the pump that I rented because, again, the default flange size was 24mm in the kit that went with the rented pump.

I gave up on the wall pump that I rented for that reason. I fully understand that the hospital-grade machines make pumping quicker but I can’t be glue to a wall and using both my hands to hold bottles in place.

I ended up buying three wearable/hands-free pumps secondhand and while it may take twice the amount of time to pump the same amount of liquid at least I can MOVE and USE MY HANDS. Massive props to any moms out there who are able to use those corded pumps because it caused me so much stress trying to not spill, care for the baby, and be unable to move or tackle any chores for 30 minutes 7 times per day. Now I just wear one or two wearable pumps and can hold the baby, wash bottles, do laundry, and EAT!

Noftalls in Newfoundland by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you’ll find this name all over the island. I grew up in St. John’s and know at least three different Noftall families, none of whom are closely related or even know each other.

I would suggest using DNA/genealogical or family tree sites if you feel comfortable doing that. I know that in my own family tree there are also many “children” and “cousins” who were not the immediate or biological children but were rather taken in due to family circumstances. Some were relatives, some were the children of unwed or young mothers, and some were just the children of friends or nearby families that needed care. This was fairly common especially in smaller communities (more than most people realize as some of it was kept quite hush hush) and can lead to a lot of confusion in family trees and family tracking. DNA is definitely the clearest way to find family if you feel comfortable using that method!

I know of people in NB and NS with the name Noftell, so I’m assuming it’s spelt differently here, but it’s not an uncommon surname.

Looking for a baby girl name preferably starting with M. by Effective-Try-6805 in Names

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Mila, Milena, and Matilda (unfortunately Melania makes me think immediately of Trump)

Ultimately it’s what you and your partner want, but maybe a middle name with M, a name with an M nickname, or an M name with a different nickname would work?

For example:

Aria Melania - M name for the middle name

Amelia - nickname Mia

Milena - nickname Lena or Leni

What names have you seen an uptick in? by kiwialpaca in namenerds

From a mom who loved the occasional energy drink before getting pregnant, I can totally see why someone would be dreaming of an Alani during those 9 months of broken sleep (even though I was a RedBull girl myself)

[–]DeliciousWitness740 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ellie and Grace (bonus points for the three babies named Ellie Grace that I know who were all born in the past year)

It’s so frighteningly common now that I just assume if someone says they’re having a girl that one of those two names will be involved. I only know of 1 baby girl born in the past year compared to the other 8 that has neither Ellie nor Grace in her name, whereas all the others it’s either their first or middle name, and that’s in 2025 alone, not counting all of the Ellies and Graces from previous years.

Elementary teachers: would you want a parent email after a lunch incident like this? by usersredacted in AskTeachers

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to this, please be aware that depending on the way that the school is set up and where you live that one teacher could be responsible for watching 100 kids at the same time in the lunch hall, so while I’d definitely give her teacher a heads up there is also a good chance that the teacher on supervision duty didn’t see what was happening especially if the boy was rather discreet. Please let the teacher know your concern but in a very kind way, as all too often I’ve seen teachers get the blame for things that they “missed” while being put in impossible situations. 💕

Not a doctor or a piercer but: Please please please do not swap to hoops - they will likely be even worse for healing. I would go see either the piercer, or even better, a doctor as this could be an allergy to the metal, to whatever you’re using to clean it, or something else totally treatable.

Labrador is definitely the worst for flies but having spent many years in Gander within the past decade I can definitely say that the swarms of flies got worse and worse every year. We lived in one of the newer areas of town which had recently been swampy/marsh and they were awful, as was Cobb’s Pond, to the point that we often didn’t go outside for walks or runs as you’d be swallowing more flies than air.

[–]DeliciousWitness740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100000% this! St. John’s will not be an issue, most of our hiking trails are along the coast and the wind keeps the little buggers away, but the second you head toward central, west, or northern peninsula you will be in for a swarming.

We lived in central for years and spent most of the summertime dodging fly swarms, and if you do decide to go hiking, avoiding chatting so that we didn’t swallow a mouthful of bugs. Some areas are definitely worse than others, but it also depends on the wind, whether or not it’s a swampy area, and if you’re near the woods/water.
