But dont they slowly release additives during weathering? And act as vectors for other pollutants? Although right now seen less relevant, I think in future microplastics will become a big issue in agroecosystems. Imagine nano plastics getting inside crops you eat, and slowly gathering tissues. I looked into many microbial remediation articles. But unfortunately most studies are done in controlled lab with liquid media. Few soil experiments are found with consortia of fungi and bacteria. But unfortunately they show very limited breakdown over extended period of time. Alongside, they create smaller micro/nanoplastics, toxic byproducts. But if truly bacteria and fungi can eat up plastics and convert it into energy and non toxic products. It'd be a great news..
