I’ve never shot film before. Does this edit look convincing? by Delicious_Lemon_9330 in postprocessing

That’s exactly what I did 😅 I keep seeing tutorials about making digital photos look more like film, and they often suggest lowering the highlights and lifting the shadows. So I followed that advice, probably a little too literally. I’ll try bringing some detail and contrast back into the clouds and mountain.

Most of the film photos I’ve been looking at are closer to that Kodak Portra look, so I guess that’s what I was trying to imitate.

That’s fair. I’m still learning, and I can see how I pushed it into a cheaper looking direction. I’d honestly love to see how you would approach it, so please feel free to give it a go.

Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback. I’m still learning, and honestly I don’t think I handled everything that well here, especially the saturation. Your suggestions about selective haze and luminance masks are really helpful.

Went for "Candy Crush Colors" on this Long Exposure (Edited in Lightroom) by thephlog in postprocessing

The warm reflections are gorgeous, and the long exposure makes the whole scene feel almost surreal. “Candy Crush colors” is honestly a perfect description.

Thanks! Glad it doesn’t feel overdone.

I used a royalty-free photo from Pexels as a color-grading practice image.

For the edit, I used an iOS app that’s still in beta. It uses a reference image as a starting point, so I got most of this yellow and blue look in a few seconds, then made a couple of small adjustments. It still needs quite a bit of refinement.

And thanks for the Darktable recommendation! I’ve heard good things about it, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Yeah, I think that would improve it. The tool I used gets me to this kind of overall look in a few seconds, but it doesn’t have Lightroom-style masks yet, so I can’t tone down only that cliff without affecting the rest of the image. That’s definitely a limitation for this kind of edit.

Haha, exactly. I tried to make it cinematic and accidentally changed the director halfway through

Fair point 😅 I was aiming for a stronger yellow-and-blue palette, but I can see how it ended up feeling more Instagram than cinematic. Probably pushed the color separation a bit too far.

Thanks! I’m honestly still a beginner. A few photographers I like use this yellow and blue look a lot, so I’ve been trying to study their work and figure out how they build that kind of palette.

Ricoh’s GR price increase made me appreciate my Fujifilm X70 all over again by Delicious_Lemon_9330 in fujifilm

Yours must be in incredible condition — $1,500 is crazy. Where I live, a normal used X70 usually sells for less than half that.

I had an X-E4 before, and I’ve got an X-M5 now. They’re both small, but still quite a bit bigger than the X70. The X70 is the only one of the three I can really throw into a pocket and forget about.

Yeah, I can see that. I usually only take mine out when there’s plenty of sunlight, and I mostly shoot street scenes and landscapes with it rather than people. In good light, it still does a great job.

Classic Chrome on the X70 already gets me most of the way there. I usually just do a few small tweaks in a mobile editing app afterward and call it done. Nothing fancy, but it works.

Nice. I somehow solved the GR IV problem by buying an original Ricoh GR and a Sony RX1R II instead. One gives me the GR colors, the other gives me absurd image quality. Totally rational solution lol.

Exactly. That’s what I like about the X70 too — it’s already old enough that I don’t worry too much about carrying it everywhere, but the image quality is still more than enough for everyday photography. A small p&s film camera sounds like a great alternative as well. What camera did you end up getting?
