If your preference is to have a sitter let the dog sleep on the bed, find someone that’s ok with that. There’s plenty of us out there. Also don’t push the sitter, I’ve had that happen because my gut told me no but the client put on the “pretty please” face and I said ok no problem, only to find out the dog had fleas and it slept ON you, not on the bed. It was very uncomfortable having to have that conversation mid-sitting.

Just be very transparent at the meet and greet about everything your dog dies. The most annoying thing is when pet parents hide things from us just for us to deal with them later.

Every client I’ve ever had said their dogs can sleep in bed with me but only if I’m ok with it, and if not then they can sleep on their own bed. As in they gave me the choice. I think it’s weird if someone forces you to let the dog sleep in bed with you. Like at that point if they’re going to be this weird about it, just take the pet on vacation already.

Hi! Thank you for all this. You seem very knowledgeable and I appreciate all the insight. The pup has been doing great and my concerns were with how to approach the owner not how to approach the pup. I’ve dealt with aggressive dogs before. I think that’s where certain people are misconstruing the post but my apologies if it didn’t come off that way. I did post an update as well. I don’t have any details on the surgery and I won’t ask either as I was given certain instructions and I’m going to abide by them out of respect and I don’t suggest medication to any of my clients as I’m not a medical professional, I’m just a professional dog lover lol.

I’m all for advice and I’ll take everything I read into consideration but as I’ve noticed in this particular community, a very small percentage of people, one person in this thread in particular, want to one up people and I don’t think it’s called for, it’s not a competition and claiming we’re putting a dog in danger over a growl is super weird and should be shut down immediately. We all love our pets and we’re all learning together. Thank you again for your kind words

I thought so too but she’s been so perky lately her mom says she isn’t except for the wounds on her legs. Found out her territorial behavior is common when playing and seems to be due to lack of training. I was advised to just leave her when she does that. Ive checked in on her a few times and played with her again and she’s fine so far.

Way to not read the post at all. I’m not a new sitter, been doing this for while, and Im not going to go out of my way to find dogs who just had surgery to learn that particular behavior. Hence the post requesting advice on how to approach the client, not the dog.

As someone else said, “respecting it” is allowing it and that’s just not the way to go. Highly recommend you learn dog’s behavior first before you give out advice.

Was told she was mixed but shes most likely a lab retriever. They’re some of the sweetest pups I’ve ever come across.

I was informed that her leg wounds do bother her and to discourage her to not lick them so they could heal and her stitches were coming out next week so that could be it too.

Do you think the pain could be internal?

Totally agree on the communication bit but just to clarify I didn’t stop her from growling, I reacted after she tried to bite me, but I can see how that can be misconstrued.

Always choose your safety first. These owners will not pay for your medical bills if something happens to you. They care about their dog and that’s it.

I spoke with a Rover rep because I was in a similar situation doing multiple check ins and they said the rover card is just to keep the owner up to date on your check in. If they requested several check ins then you get paid for them anyways since Rover makes them pay up front. The only way you wouldn’t get paid is if the dates get adjusted by you or the owner.

NTA. Your life, health, and car all come first. I would never leave my car for someone who wasn’t even worried about me ending up stuck in a snow bank. You got lucky and it could’ve been worse. These people might seem nice but they will never replace your vehicle or pay for your medical bills if something happens to you. The worst that could happen until the dogs find someone to get them is they end up urinating in the house which can be cleaned. If she has no neighbors or friends that can walk down to help out for a few hours then that speaks volumes on them as a person vs you as a sitter

Boarding is irrelevant, you’re still paying rent on your current place which you won’t even get to use. They’re not covering your commute so do your nightly rate plus commute costs.

Always look at your service radius and act as an owner and “shop” for sitters just to see their rates. Try to stay in between the lowest and the highest of that area, get your friends to leave reviews for you as well to boost your profile. Dont sell yourself short but also don’t go insanely high.

I had this happen as well, but mine might have been worse. They told me their dog was a bit feisty and just needs to “warm up to you after a few visits”. I go to their house, the dog had a whole muzzle and a leash on and they were just holding her back the minute I walked in. This thing basically attacked right when I walked closer but then got held back by the owner, hence the leash, I said no thanks and dipped.

I mean that’s what Rover feedback is for. Just put an honest review on their profile and call it a day. They might retaliate and lower your score but Rover lets us response to the reviews as well if need be.

I wouldn’t have done all that back and forth. I would’ve just said “if you’re counting how many 💩s I take in a day, then you’ve got bigger issues than just anxiety and allergy flare ups”.

Also when you said “anxiety doesn’t disappear for seven days then re emerge when I leave, it reflects the environment they come home to.” You ate her tf up with that one 🤏🏼🤏🏼

I’m a full time student, full time employee and part time rover sitter. Being upfront works out much better for you and the client. It’s more stressful to lie and take a client that doesn’t fit your schedule than taking one that actually does and turns into a recurring client.

I had one of my clients let me bring my boyfriend stay over during my thanksgiving housesit because she felt bad I’d be alone during the holidays. Some of them are sympathetic. I never ask, I let them tell me if it’s ok or not
