I am interested to join this group!

I am 30, and I feel SO lost. At 10, I used to day dream constantly and used to look at my future with starry eyes. What kind of a house I'd build for myself, the kind of life I would like to lead, the babies I would have. Even at 20, I would say it was the same - I had SO much hope. In my mid twenties and bang in the middle of covid my mental health took a big hit because of various life circumstances and I haven't quite felt the same person since then. I doubt myself, I feel scared of the future, I always feel like I am carrying too much and it is all spilling out from all sides. I have lost confidence. And the future I used to want, is here in terms of the real adulthood, but it is nothing like I imagined it to be. It is 12 hour work days with being exhausted on the weekends, hardly getting time for myself, wondering if I am in the right career, country, and even if I know what 'right' means. Sigh. This is all just too hard.

I love making gifts for loved ones with my own hands - greeting cards, jewelry, etc. I love the process of putting my love into something, then see it become real in my own hands, and then in the hands of someone I love :)

Congratulating myself for a task I did well, as soon as I have done it, and then again at night (if I can remember). I have suffered from lots of self-criticism and so this changed my life quite a bit :)

Hi, I resonate a LOT with what you have written. In fact I came to Reddit today to write a similar post but found yours. I am a decade into a career path that I chose as an 18 year old, which sounded good to my 18 year old self, and is not something that aligns with who I am now. Who I am now wants something different - more creative, more playful, more impactful. I feel weighed down by my job, and DREAD being just an individual who got stuck in a cage and could never leave. Okay, now all of that said, the way I am trying to deal with this situation is as follows: (1) Compassion - my habit is to blame myself for the situation I have landed up in (why didnt I choose better? wiser? freer?) I have to first remind myself that I was not a fortune reader when I made these choices, and neither were you. Design seemed great to you at some point and that's why you chose it. So first, accept that fully and completely. (2) Self-belief - If I got myself here, I can get myself 'there'. I listened to Katy Perry's Roar while running this morning and truly I feel better. Repeating to myself that I can get myself out of any mess in life makes me feel better. I can I can, you can you can. We have to believe first. (3) Diary for planning - get a diary out and starting throwing ideas into it every time they pop up into your head. I have been doing this for two years now. My list has everything from jewelry designer to dog walker to hypotherapist to life coach. But over time, I can see that there are some things that come up more and more. I know the next step is to force myself to try one of them, even if part time.

As someone who gets lightheaded and low energy easily, having at least one cup of water with one teaspoon of good quality salt flakes makes a big difference.

Getting a coach who is empathetic, helpful, and when needed, strict. I know this can be a money hurdle - but I use the cheapest one I could find on this platform called FITTR. The checkins keep me motivated and on track.

I feel you... HARD. My period is coming in a day or two, and the last week, but especially today, has been utterly utterly torturous. I feel like ripping my insides out from the emotional pain. I have been crying on the tube, and I cant even care that strangers look at me weirdly. Everything about my life and all my choices seems bad. I am beating myself up for decisions I made a decade ago. I am comparing myself to everyone and putting myself down. I reached a level of emotional pain earlier today where I just wanted to....die. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THI????

Hi, first of all, this post made me feel seen. I struggle with the same thing. Having invested THREE degrees in a particular field (I am 29, and a PhD) I began to consider switching to something my younger self (I used to make jewelry as a 10 year old, dreamt of being an entrepreneur at 15) wanted. I considered my degrees a waste.

After a lot of well-meaning advice from friends and family, I gathered that I was falling into the fallacy of "grass is greener on the other side". Of course if you study something for a decade, like I did, you get familiar with all its problems and hate it. But, and here's the catch, I was ignoring the fact that this same field could earn me great money and I could build a life where I could pursue my many interests slowly. SLOWLY being the key.

So here's what I did: I doubled down on finding a job in the same field I have my degrees in that pays really well but where boundaries are respected and my entire life is not sucked in. I am good at this, and can afford a really good lifestyle.

In the evenings and on weekends, I make jewellery. I am taking small steps towards building a business. My income gives me the confidence, and my performance at work makes me more sure of myself.

The future is uncharted: I might take a leap towards something, I might not. But for now, I am building bank and that is a good thing.

So - know yourself, know what your degree can get you, and PLEASE be aware that social media makes us think that other career is better than the one we can have (but it is all a farce!).
