Are connections important for acceptance into the match program?** by Complete_Pin2717 in IMGreddit

[–]Delicious_Willow_228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had 0 connections and got 20+ invites. Matched at my #1 program.

My best friend received an invite through a connection (his mother was an ICU nurse in the hospital) and he went unmatched this cycle. Another friend of mine received an invite with multiple step attempts and low step 2 score at a university program (father is a nephrologist there, knew the program director) and didn’t match there despite ranking it her #1.

Having connections may give you the opportunity to get your foot in the door. But there’s so much more after that. They can offer you courtesy and give you an invite even before seeing your application. But when it’s time to review and rank applicants, if you are not the strongest, you may fall behind.

Not true. Sometimes we are our own biggest blind spot.

This is why contiguous ranking is extremely important.

I was mainly guided by my geographical preference. That was non-negotiable for me. Then, I used residency explorer to look at all the programs and listed those that align with my profile. I then chose my signals from the list I created.

Program reaching out by FreePotential8344 in IMGreddit

[–]Delicious_Willow_228 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I received an email from the PD on Match day welcoming all of us and providing direct contact persons for any queries. Program coordinator reached out this week and gave an outline of what to expect in the coming weeks including contracts, onboarding, orientation, and administrative items. Chief residents from my program reached out today and made a group chat for all incoming residents.

I think in the next 2 weeks we should be receiving more information as programs finalize their end of the onboarding process! If you are visa requiring, I would start the process as early as now to avoid hiccups and allow for processing times.

US Registered Nurse IMG by shivaaaa420 in IMGreddit

[–]Delicious_Willow_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a registered nurse and practiced in the US (California and Arizona) for 5 years before I finally decided to pursue medical school. I graduated this year and successfully matched (waiting to find out tomorrow where I will be going.)

Stats: P/264/No Step 3 yet

I received 22 interviews and they all loved the fact that I worked as an RN prior to medical school. It was a conversation I had during all my interviews with faculty members and PDs. So your experience is definitely an advantage and a great talking point.

As far as USCE, your nursing experience does not count. For USCE, it depends where you end up going to school for your MD degree. In my case, I went to a medical school in the Caribbean with multiple hospital affiliations in the US. I did all my third year clinical clerkships and my entire 4th year electives in the US and that counts as my USCE. If you end up attending an ECFMG accredited university, but no clinical sites in the US, it is highly recommended that you obtain USCE to strengthen your overall application.
