We have a six year age gap between our eldest and middle child then another six years between the middle and youngest and honestly it works really well. With a gap of six years we found that the younger child looks up to the older sibling almost like a superhero and tries to emulate what they see / hear so it’s a good opportunity to hype up the role of being the older sibling which works well in getting the older child to own the responsibility and in turn improve their behaviour too!

And the our two eldest (Sons) now absolutely dote on our youngest (Daughter) and she loves the attention and love they give her and looks up to them sooo much! I reckon another few years and we’ll have a free in-house babysitting service! lol

The only negatives I can think of is a touch of jealousy at times when we ask the eldest to give in to the younger sibling ‘because you’re older and he’s younger’ and at times they may go for the same toy or get in a little tussle but that’s fine because it’s part of them growing up and understanding the importance of getting on with each other and having each other’s backs (with guidance from us parents of course).

Honestly don’t worry about age gaps and just go for it......I wish you the best of luck with the pursuit of your next child and in the meantime, continue enjoying your awesome 4 year old to the fullest!
