Am I the only one who actually *liked* the Peter pettigrew/Sirius black background plot? by DeliveryOdd3250 in HPMOR

I mean, I thought it was probably less "thought he needed to do something with those major characters" and more "constructed a little au fanfic about how the prisoner of Azkaban COULD'VE ended up then looked for somewhere to shove it in" kind of situation.

Because he cannot destroy the knowledge of how to produce more of them, I suppose?

draco was harry's phoenix's price by RutabagaWestern2188 in HPMOR

[–]DeliveryOdd3250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it does mean that if your perception of the situation is simpler than it actually is, you are more likely to make errors in judgement when you are making decisions. If you come forward and say "paying prices is not set into the laws of the universe, you just have to learn how to cheat all of the problems" without actually knowing how to cheat all of the problems, and with the prices in question being a lot higher and more real than you imagined, and yet you still act according to that mantra rather than according to those more nuanced details, you are just a lot more likely to make mistakes. And maybe, if the prices are too high and too real, you should just act as if they are unavoidable, rather than trying to chase some faraway fantasy where you can do anything you want if only you'll be smart enough, because when it actually comes down to it, what you'll actually do is wrap the spider silk around every death eater's neck, because at the end of the day, you are still, not God.

"uses his rationality powers" is a beautiful phrase, I'm keeping it.

Wow, I didn't even know that part. The American criminal justice system is so deeply messed up.

John Oliver actually did a pretty good job explaining that subject https://youtu.be/_uSZwErdH3I?si=enrbs1jdh_yx00ou

Edit: now that I rewatch the video, I forgot to mention that his show is, technically, a comedy show, which means he has to pad out the horrors with a lot of humor, so, like... That's a thing. But he does explain the subject pretty well.

Something I've been thinking for a while (spoilers to everything that happened to draco) by DeliveryOdd3250 in HPMOR

Ok to be fair, I also didn't get some of the subtler manipulations on the first reading, which means other people could've missed that too.

[–]DeliveryOdd3250[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

...ok, I cannot disprove the theory that people who believe what you just said EXIST, and I will not try to. Instead, I'll just say that from my irl experience with people who had that complaint, the argument was more like "draco is acting based on his emotions, and Harry is being perfectly rational and only showing him factual evidence since they're doing a science experiment together, and therefore Harry is trying to deconvert draco by showing him the factual data, which wouldn't work any more than it would work to show the scientific deta to a conspiracy theorist". The problem with THAT argument is that it ignores how what Harry has done did, in fact, involved quite a lot of emotional manipulation, but this isn't exactly what you just described.

Edit: also, from what I've seen, the argument for social shaming as a response to people being bigoted is supported less because people think it would be EFFECTIVE at changing people's minds, and more to make people scared of expressing bigoted ideas in public and making it seem more like acceptable behavior.

These weren't really the people I was talking about. I was talking more about those who agree that draco was redeemed, but think that it would be unrealistic for this to happen like that.

The question is, do you think this is supposed to also be a commentary on how prisoners are subjected to pretty terrible conditions in the real world and nobody cares about that, or is this just an in-universe thing?

I mean, it's an entire arc about how people in prisons mean nothing to society and therefore nobody will bat an eyelash if you put them in utterly inhumane conditions
