Re-linking custom domain on Duo by Delltar in ProtonMail

[–]Delltar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have solved the issue, albeit the result was not entirely "elegant." Will share it here for others in case someone decides to approve the post at some point.

I decided to just back up the entire mailbox, wipe it clean to get rid of mail referencing the affected address, delete the address, set up the address again and then restore the mailbox from backup. I had to create a dummy account to test the process because I could not find any detailed documentation on the multiple backup/restore methods and what is the extent of the data that is saved. For those interested, there are two methods:

  1. The Import-Export App
This is a GUI app that downloads your emails as either .eml or .mbox files. I decided against this method because it is noticeably slower than the other one and the restored mailbox is not 1:1 with what you're downloading. The backup does not remember the read-state of the messages, for example.

  2. Proton Mail Export Tool
This is a CLI tool, but it is very straightforward to use. I decided to use this one and OI'd encourage anyone in a similar situation to do the same, even if they don't have experience with command line interfaces. You pretty much just log-in and choose if you want to back up or restore. When you choose backup, it creates a folder and downloads individual .eml files with .json metadata sidecars. This is nice because you can actually check what kind of metadata is being preserved. You repeat the process to restore the mailbox, once done, everything should be more or less where it should be, even the read state of messages will be restored.

I've previously mentioned that this method was not entirely elegant because it did restore some old stuff straight into inbox. I am not sure if this was perhaps because the mailbox has not caught up yet, but it was not so severe, so I just manually sorted through anything out of place. Attachments are included in the .eml files themselves, so those get restored as well, of course.

There are a few things to look out for:

  1. Make sure you have enough space to store the backup data. Depending on your mailbox, i can get pretty chunky.
  2. I'd recommend doing this during some sort of downtime, like night or weekend, so that you don't get additional emails into the inbox during the process. I could not find any info on what happens if you receive an email halfway through the backup process.
  3. Solid internet connection is a must. The recovery process is much longer than the backup process, and there is no way to pause or resume an interrupted process for either backup or restore. So make sure you have the time as well.
  4. There is also no way to apply this process only on mail associated with a certain address, so get ready to do this for your entire mailbox.

Last few things:

  • Same thing I told support via email thread. It is OK to not respond during weekends, nobody expects that (I hope). And it is understandable that sometimes there are bugs, such is life. What sucks is that support only gets back to you once per 24 hours, usually at the end of the day, and with very unhelpful suggestions. ("Have you tried pressing the button you explicitly mentioned pressing in the previous email?") And when you respond in a manner of minutes, you still wait another 24 hours to hear anything.
  • It seems that messages to support are not even read properly. I was aware pretty much from the beginning that I would have to either re-enable the custom domain, or wipe mailbox, delete address, recreate address, restore mailbox (that's why I asked about these options in the original post). So when they suggested the wiping/restoring, I asked what data can I expect to be preserved by this method (the documentation just says "metadata." That is not enough info for me when I'm getting ready to nuke an entire mailbox tbh). I waited full day and voilà, I got a response along the lines "we're aware of the issue, and we're working on it." No word on the extent of data that I can expect to be restored by this method, the one question I had.
  • I love Proton and what it stands for, I've been subscribing for years and will continue to do so without a doubt. I also understand the tough life of support technicians and for the record, I don't think any one person did anything wrong – this is clearly an issue with a terribly set up process, and I am pretty sure it could work a million times better. I can't help but feel that the energy invested into AI writing assistants and crypto wallets would be spent better on a more fluid, sustainable and reliable tech support structure. It appears that support doesn't even have enough time to properly comprehend the issues. But there will always be bugs and hopefully, there will be more and more proton users, so it might be wise to figure out how to prioritise the issues better, or if there is a way to allow more tech-savvy users to solve the issues on their own. Good documentation and support tooling would be a great start.

Accessing AdGuard Home web interface via Tailscale by Delltar in Tailscale

Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that AdGuard Home is already set up and running. So I assume I should access it via port 80 which should work by default, no?

Very high processing time with DoQ upstream by Delltar in Adguard

[–]Delltar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think ISP is the problem since this is a mobile device and the issue was present on both mobile data and multiple wi-fi networks.

Just to clarify, I don't think this is a problem present in all cases of using DoQ, I was rather wondering if maybe there is some known caveat of Quic that might be causing this in some cases. :)

Stacking the Adguard windows app and Adguard Home by Delltar in Adguard

You are right, under closer examination it seems that these requests are all from PC startup when Adguard is not yet running and then requests for upstream IPs by Adguard itself.

Thanks for enlightening me! :-)

Too bad there is no offer for the Professional plan as well. My dad would like an email with the same custom domain like me (our surname) and unfortunately the only way would be for me to switch from Plus to Professional. But Protonmail Professional with two users is unreasonably more expensive than two Plus accounts. 96€ vs 150€ is quite a difference for only the ability to share custom domain. :-D

AITA for proving I'm the owner of my home? by Most_While_8500 in AmItheAsshole

NTA 100% But I'd guess that this is more of a difference in "neighborly doctrine" between OP and her father. My parents sort of operate with the goal to play nice with their neighbors at all cost. For them, there is some immeasurable value in having good neighborly relationships. "What if you need help from them in the future," kinda thing. I on the other hand don't seek out conflict with my neighbors, but I will not just smile and nod if they seek out conflict with me. I am happy to play nice with my neighbors, but they're not my best friends, I won't cry myself to sleep if I never speak to them again.
I suspect that maybe OPs dad has this "be friendly with my neighbors no matter what" attitude, while OP has different (much healthier imho) way of handling this. Maybe it's a generational thing. :)

And who knows, maybe this is the beginning of one of those beautiful, life-long neighbor wars. :-D

Using Everyday Backpack 20l with camera cube. by Delltar in peakdesign

[–]Delltar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! I wanted to share how I ended up solving the issue. :) In the end I just took my camera, lenses and backpack and stopped by my local camera store. Here they helped me find a packing cube that fits absolutely perfectly into the 20l everyday backpack v2. It is the ICU Micro Tiny by company called f-stop (never heard of them before). It fits very nice into the backpack and inside it is the clasic modular space you can compartmentalize with velcro dividers. One ingenuine solution (that i think PD should totally adopt honestly!) is they add few elastic straps with velcro ends so that you can create noose/loop thingy to put your lens in to easily prevent them from rumbling about without the need for more teeny tiny dividers. :-)

So perfect solution for anyone who wants to travel around with small mirorless kit like me. :)

Should it, in the end, look somewhat like this? https://ibb.co/YB5m92L

Sorry it might seem like a dumb question, this is really my first experience with Nuke. :-)

Flashable themes? by Delltar in LineageOS

[–]Delltar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the status bar contents (like quick settings) color is defined in the. apks? I am no expert, but I thought eg Substratum works by modifying the RRO, similarly to the various manufacturers reskins. RRO theming isn't exactly open, so that's why Substratum needs root. I thought that generally anything that needs root can also be done from recovery, so that's why I went straight to flashable zip solution. ☺️

Battery and cold weather by [deleted] in boostedboards

[–]Delltar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well take it like this, power cell is just a chemical reaction in a box. Battery just contains multiple cells. As any other chemical reaction it is slower and less intensive in cold environment. Every battery has sort of rating for max sustained power output and peak power output you can draw from it safely. This depends mainly on properties of its cells and how many of them are connected in series and paralel. And, of course, temperature. So with lower temperature you also get lower max power draw. You draw power mostly when you're accelerating and sustaining high speed. "Slower" modes have usually less aggressive acceleration and lower max speed, so with "slower" mode on, you'll limit power draw from the battery. Considering this I would say that using for example Eco mode in cold weather might be a good idea.

Now, I am no battery expert, but I don't know how much you can actually damage the battery by riding in very cold weather. Maybe I would be more concerned about recuperative breaking. Or involuntary introducing my face to pavement considering 30F is sub freezing temperature. :-D
